Grace VanderWaal on Tour
When Grace VanderWaal auditioned for America's Got Talent at the age of 12, Simon Cowell called her "the next Taylor Swift." That was in 2016, and all she had at the time was her voice and a ukulele. To be clear, that's all that this young woman from Suffern, New York, needs to hold an audience's attention — her raspy voice, sweet strumming and wise-beyond-her-years songs are a marvel to behold in person — but VanderWaal has only become more skillful and worldly since winning that show's 11th season. And she's taken her indie-folk-meets-artsy-pop act everywhere from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Special Olympics (duetting with Jason Mraz) to opening slots on tours by Imagine Dragons and Florence + the Machine. She's also added a band to her performances, which gives her bigger songs that extra oomph, but the highlight is seeing VanderWaal front and center, uke in hand, bouncing and cooing as she pours her heart out to the crowd.
Grace VanderWaal in Concert
On the night that Grace VanderWaal won America's Got Talent at the age of 12, Stevie Nicks gushed, "She reminds me a lot of me...we like to be a little different...not like anybody else." VanderWaal's individuality — that combination of an unbelievably high emotional intelligence and a quirky-but-not-cutesy approach to singing and songwriting — is the defining hallmark of her career and it goes back to her childhood. VanderWaal began singing her own made-up songs at three, and within a few years began searching for more grown-up subject matter, writing lyrics from the perspective of characters in movies she'd seen. She bought herself a ukulele at 11, taught herself to play by watching videos online, and soon began posting videos of her own. When she tried out for AGT, it was with an original song about shifting identity, "I Don't Know My Name." Afterward she'd be invited to play that composition on countless talk shows, not to mention record it for her major-label debut EP, 2016's Perfectly Imperfect. Her 2017 full-length, Just the Beginning, found VanderWaal incorporating more modern electronic pop production into her otherwise acoustically driven sound. That opened the door for exciting new sonic hybrids, like 2018's "Clearly" (a boldly neon reinterpretation of Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now") and the epic, "Hideaway," recorded for the animated film Wonder Park.
I went to her concert in ATL for her first tour of her first album. It was great and I had lots of fun.
The tickets were underpriced considering how great Grace and the opening act performed. The 2 person band backed Grace gracefully while she stood out, still able to hit notes and prance around as if she was not sick with a common cold. Webster Hall provided an intimate atmosphere, allowing VanderWaal to feed off the energy of the crowd. Will be attending another concert of her's in the future.
Concert was an amazing time me and me sister went and got meet and greets and got pictures with grace and she was the sweetest the only issue though was that our pictures never came in and our packages never did either and no email has come in about either.
First time there and was blown away i had a great time. Grace sounded great!! Hopfully she'll be back at the TLA sometime. Great staff good vibes and all around awesome time.
It is not really possible to understand just how an amazing singer and performer Grace Vanderwaal is, until you have seen her live. Her voice is beautiful and richly faceted - even on a night like this where she was ill, and had to skip a line here and there and transpose lines when they were too taxing for her sore throat. They way she managed that effortlessly and without subtracting anything from the performance demonstrated another side of her talent - her deep musicality and sense of timing, as well as her dedication to her art and her audience. All this combines with the music an the lyrics and Grace's personality to what is perhaps her most important quality as an artist: she is a fabulous stoyteller: in every song (including the covers) she, she don't "just" sing a song, she tells a story that has something to say yo everyone in the audience. She also have as an electrifying stage presence and made sure to be close to the audience and use the entire width of the stage. Her band supported her perfectly and you could clearly sense that their many days on the road (including touring with Imagine Dragons last year) have made them and grace fit look hand in glove. The supporting artist Patrick Martin deserves a lot of praise as well. He was a perfect choice for an opener for Grace bot in style and personality. His performance was great and his music is really good. Everyone who likes Grace's music should give him a listen.
Went to the meet and greet. Grace was a sweetheart. I had the best time ever!
I was surprised to see how much Grace has embraced elements of rock in her live performance on the "Ur So Beautiful" tour, but it's totally awesome. Her growth as an artist has been so much fun to watch. He's an amazing singer, of course, but she's also a complete musician and live performer. Grace is a genuine rockstar, making her a blast to see live. All this and her live vocals are also still as incredible as ever.
A GREAT show by a GREAT artist in a really nice small theater. Definitely an evening to remember!!
I have seen perform 7 times now. Each time she has stepped up her performance. From her very first show in Vegas, Grace as demonstrated her ability to command the stage. She really truly enjoys doing what she is doing. She stills gives that sweet smile once she finishes a song. You have to look closely cuz it only lasts a second or two, but it is the same smile I saw when she finished 'Beautiful Thing' on AGT. WoW!! What a talent she has.
Everything was perfect except I was surprised with such a range in age difference they didn’t try to do only seating for this event so the kids could see. I wasn’t bothered because i was tall enough but I could feel for the little ones.
