Miss Saigon on Tour

The latest touring production of Miss Saigon evolved out of West End and Broadway revivals celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tony Award–winning musical's 1989 London debut. Arriving amid fevered conversations around the topic of immigration, Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg's translation of Puccini's 1904 opera Madama Butterfly to the Vietnam War is timelier than ever. The French playwrights' extravagant "popera," conceived between their celebrated Les Misérables and Martin Guerre, has aged equally well on an artistic level. Director Laurence Connor brings realism and immediacy — and, of course, a scene-stealing helicopter — to this tense and tender tale of a Vietnamese mother who chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of her son.

About Miss Saigon

Miss Saigon begins on April 29, 1975, the night before the United States essentially ends the Vietnam War by surrendering South Vietnam's capital city. The colorfully amoral pimp, fixer and survivor known as the Engineer (Red Concepción) sells the poor yet virtuous country girl Kim (Emily Bautista) to an American soldier (Anthony Festa), who is forced to abandon her after a night of passion. Three years later, Chris, now married, reunites with Kim and their child in Bangkok.

Reviewing the show's 1991 Broadway debut, New York Times critic Frank Rich lauded Miss Saigon's lush melodies and praised it as "a gripping entertainment of the old school (specifically, the Rodgers and Hammerstein East-meets-West school of South Pacific and The King and I)." With its revival, audiences can again swoon to gorgeous ballads like "You Will Not Touch Him" and "If You Want to Die in Bed," which reflect Kim's transformation from a naive victim of circumstance into a steely conduit of fearless maternal resolve. The musical's contemporary relevance later reaches its apex in "The American Dream," in which the Engineer fantasizes about the supersized life he will lead when he finally moves to America, where the Vietnam War's lessons are still being learned.

    Miss Saigon

by Yo on 11/21/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

The show was really good. The volume needed to be up more. We were sitting in the back of the Orchestra level in the back and it was hard to hear all the words.

    A very emotional Broadway Show

by Shirley, one of the Boat People on 11/20/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

This was my very first Broadway show. Miss Saigon Broadway show was so fabulous, not only there are good singers, but all the dancers, back staged performers were so great, too. I was too afraid to blink my eyes and miss the good parts :-) I really enjoyed all the scenes, one of my most favorites was the helicopter scene. It almost threw me out of my chair. The last part was the most emotional scene for me when Kim shot herself. I could not stop crying :-( Overall, Miss Saigon Broadway Show was worth my money. Thanks to the organizer(s) for having the show on time and very orderly in helping the audiences finding their seats. I will watch it again in the future and recommend my friends as well!

    Awesome as the first time...

by Nel_nel_cool_j on 11/20/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

First time I saw this production was on Broadway in 1991. It was my first Broadway musical and I was awestruck. It has always been my yardstick in how I measure the musicals I've watched there after. I saw it once more a few years later, also in New York. Two other times after, as local productions. This time was just as good. I love the minor tweaks this traveling production has done and still kept the integrity of the original. Still the emotional tug-at-your-heart story. I’d totally recommend it!

Do not go on opening night

by Jennifer on 11/20/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

They had a lot of kinks to work out :( I was highly disappointed as this was my 3rd broadway show. Overall good storyline... if only I could understand the main characters singing. They did not enunciate very well so I had a very hard hearing/understanding- as did many people around me.

    A wonderful musical.

by P. on 11/20/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I truly enjoyed the touring company musical, as I had never seen the original. The actors were very professional and the music was fantastic. Although the subject was quite sad, it was a perfect reflection of the times. . .

I've been wanting to see Miss Saigon live since I first heard "The Movie in My Mind" in 1998. This performance was so incredible. Very moving, beautifully performed. I cried for most of it. Highly recommend going to see it.

    Beautiful theater; sad acoustics

by J. F. on 11/19/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

Set was amazing, effects and costumes impressive, dance excellent, but from where we sat on the balcony we could barely understand a word of what was being sung by any of the 3 main characters. There were only 2 cast members whose voices were projected we’ll enough, so it wasn’t necessarily a volume problem. Audience response was generally positive so I have to believe that it could just have been a sound issue in that far side balcony area, as a few others we spoke to had the same problem.

    Wonderful show

by Jeanne on 11/18/19San Jose Center for the Performing Arts - San Jose

I enjoyed it so much. The talent was amazing. I was a little too far away. 2nd Balcony. Next time I will sit closer. However, The orchestra was very loud and overwhelmed the singers.

    Finally

    by C. S. on 11/7/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

I've listened to Miss Saigon for years, when we traveled we had a rotation of musicals and of all the musicals I've always wanted to see Miss Saigon! Its definitely more risque in person so make sure no kids around. Its been off tour for years so I thought I'd missed my opportunity but finally they did it! I noticed some updates to the lyrics that fit so it was fine. Obviously the technology has improved so they could do a bit more with the helicopter! It was a fantastic show there is a lot that doesn't make sense only listening to it so now I have all the missing bits.

    Inappropriate for ...well, anyone

    by L. E. on 11/7/19

I’ve seen Miss Saigon twice in the past which is why I wanted to share the experience with my sixteen year old granddaughter. What a huge mistake! Besides the fact that very little of either the dialog or the song lyrics were understandable, this newest production’s focus was on sex (very graphic) rather than a dramatic love story. I’m no prude but I found this show to be somewhere between embarrassing to disgusting.

Loved it! Great show and my kids loves it too!

by Amy on 11/7/19Paramount Theatre - Seattle

My only complaint is that the seats in the mezzanine are very close together. Not made for a 6 foot tall man. But the show was fabulous!
