Looking forward to having the NY Empire back at Billie Jean King Campus at National Tennis Center. Empire matches are great, fast tennis. You’ll wonder what took so long for you to go to a match. You’re close to the action with players you know. Women’s and Men’s singles and doubles and mixed. No Ad - makes you realize how slow WTA/ATP tennis matches are. Try it - you’ll love it.
We have enjoyed catching NY Empire events on television, so thought it would be great to see in person. While the "undercard" matches were fine, we were very disappointed that there was no "headliner" match -- Marty Fish, though billed as the singles match when we purchased the tickets, was not there. Neither was Coach Gigi Fernandez. All in all, unfortunately, the tennis we saw wasn't worth the ticket price or the trip to Billie Jean King Stadium.
Generally a really good time if you like good tennis and aren't just there for the stars. Mardy Fish was marketed as the name player but didn't appear. Food on grounds didn't live up to the 'local ethnic vendors', but was rather a single souvlaki food truck with mediocre fare. Buying upgraded tickets a bit of a waste as court 17 at the UNTC seats quite a lot and within 30 minutes they said to sit anywhere you wish. The tennis was really good. The constant on/off music is a bit much if the players play fast, which they did since it was pretty warm out. They should learn to occasionally build in a break. A good time, but the event could certainly be tweaked to be more appealing at this site.
The Billie Jean King facility is excellent. The WTT format is fun and lively. One caution is that there were no "marquee" players there for either team (Sunday at 5:00 match). Also, at a sparsely attended event, we had general admission seats, 20 feet from the court, much better than most, more expensive reserved seats.
Great, up-close tennis, but it would have been nice to have seen at least ONE headliner tennis pro. Even the coach for the Empire team was missing. Very disappointing.
