About

Mega Mezcla on Tour

WSKQ-FM, better known as Mega 97.9, is a tropical-themed Latino-focused radio station emanating from New York City. Owned by the Spanish Broadcasting System, Mega 97.9 is the most listened-to radio station in the city, passing such luminaries as Z100 and Lite FM. In fact, Mega 97.9 is also the most listened-to Latino radio station in the country, which speaks to its strong appeal with Hispanic listeners in the tri-state area.

To capitalize on that success, the station has set up the Mega Mezcla concert series, an annual showcase for some of the best and most popular acts in Latino music. The 2018 edition took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, and featured acts like Ozuna, Nicky Jam, and J Balvin, as well as the host, Mega 97.9 DJ Alex Sensation. The 2019 edition, taking place on April 20, 2019, will also be held at the Prudential Center.

Mega 97.9 has a long history in the tri-state area, dating back to 1983, when SBS purchased WVNJ in New Jersey and converted it to Super KQ, a Spanish-language adult contemporary station. It wasn't until 1993, however, after years of struggling with ratings, that Mega 97.9 was born. It featured a shift toward the more tropical dance vibes that can still be heard on the station to this day. Think salsa, merengue, bachata, and reggaeton.

Aside from the Mega Mezcla, perhaps the most famous of Mega 97.9's programs is the morning show El Vacilón de la Mañana, which is one of the most listened-to Spanish morning shows in the country and sometimes the most popular morning show in all of New York. The impact of Mega 97.9 is felt across the country; the morning show is syndicated in Latino-heavy markets like Miami, Atlanta, and even Puerto Rico.

    Not great

by Mega on 6/9/22Prudential Center - Newark

The singer/ whoever set up the stage didn't care for the fans that were on the side of the stage in the upper sections. The seats did not have a good view to the stage and the sound quality was bad, you can barely make out the songs, just noises. The two screens they had was only for fans not seating on the far sides. Terrible disregard for the fans that were on the side section who can't afford top dollar to seat in the lower levers and ground floor right in front of the stage. Couldn't really enjoy the concert.

    it was okay

    by d. m. on 5/31/22

for one i really found it to be okay, i didn’t expect the show to go until almost 1 am. I already knew ivy queen wasn’t gonna go considering that alex sensation posted the line up 5 hours before it started and ivy queen wasn’t on it but he should of said something before the concert and not after. every artist were good, i do feel like they could of done better with the audio system. went to other concerts and the audio was good, but the music was too high and their mic was too low. was a little disappointed that randy from jowell y randy didn’t show up but i guess he has an habit of not showing up to shows. i also do wish the artist had a better set list for their concerts, the songs they performed first should of been performed last and they aint sing some of their popular songs either but overall it was okay, hopefully the next one is good
