About

A singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes, Anoushka Shankar grew up playing alongside her father and Guru, the legendary Ravi Shankar. In recent years she has emerged as a global music star, performing to worldwide adulation for her breathtaking sitar virtuosity and releasing numerous critically acclaimed albums.

Anoushka Shankar's music takes the ancient Indian instrument firmly into the contemporary world – into electronica, classical music and flamenco, collaborating alongside the world’s great orchestras with artists as diverse as Sting, M.I.A and Herbie Hancock.

Co-written by the extraordinary percussionist and hang player Manu Delago, her album Land of Gold, is a response to the humanitarian plight of refugees and a searing cry against injustice.

Be astounded by an evening of deeply expressive music, which draws upon India’s ancient culture, while creating a dynamically intoxicating sense of the contemporary.

“She’s one of the most gifted artists in her generation.”

Los Angeles Times

“A natural talent blessed with fluid technique and keen musical instincts, she possesses a darker, purer sound than her father (Ravi Shankar) but is clearly guided by his tutelage.”

The Birmingham News

“Most people are musicians simply because they play a certain instrument; when they plat that instrument the music appears. But Ravi to me, he is the music; it just happens to be that he plays the Sitar. And it’s like that with Anoushka. She has that quality – she is the music. “

    Transcendent

    by fallboy52 on 10/20/23Moore Theatre - Seattle

This was my fourth Anoushka concert. I will always go to see her. She is world-class--mesmerizing incredibly skilled, joyful, creating a new music with classical Indian scales and rhythms infused with the spirit of jazz improvisation and complexity. Her current group of musicians is the best I've seen--there's a full drum kit, plus a standup bass, her long-time player of Indian drums, and a world-class clarinetist. Don't miss the chance to see her if at all possible.

    Ok, could have been better!

by NimSum on 5/25/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

It was an honor to watch Anushka perform but a disappointment at the same time. She barely performed for 30 min and left. It seemed unorganized as she left stage couple times and came back. We enjoyed but another 30 min would have been well worth the 1.5 hr drive one way from OC!

Anouska was amazing, rest less so

by Histnerd on 5/23/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

The main even was absolutely amazing. The sitar concerto was beautifully written and amazingly performed. The chamber orchestra was lively but the skill of Anoushka was sublime. The second half of the concert left a lot to be desired. Marc Lowenstein's "HaZ'màn HaZèh הזמן הזה!" Left much to be desired. It tried to do too many things and did none well. It was discordant, every time it seemed to be doing something, every time it started to sound worth listening to it changed to something else. I clearly wasn’t the only one who felt this way, I saw many on their phones and more than a few left. The Biset symphony was okay, it was definitely well performed, but I think there is a reason that the composer never tried to see it performed, it was nice but not spectacular. I do wonder if my opinion on the symphony was influenced by the uninspiring performance of Marc Lowenstein's "HaZ'màn HaZèh הזמן הזה!" , but I honestly wish I had left at intermission.

    Amazing

by Tom on 5/23/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

Anoushka was amazing as always. And the LA chamber orchestra was phenomenal as well. The audience was another story though. People were loud, came in late, we’re dropping things on the ground, talking, making noise. I think people have forgotten how to behave in public.

    I love Anoushka!

by Jet on 5/23/23Alex Theatre - Glendale

The Alex Theater is a fantastic old art deco style theater. I have seen Anoushka several times and she was absolutely fabulous! The only thing I was extremely disappointed by was that she only played for about 35 minutes. The rest of the concert was two other pieces performed by the orchestra. The orchestra was great, but I feel like they billed it as the whole concert would be with Anoushka playing Ravi Shankar's music. All in all it was an outstanding performance by all.

    Spellbinding!

    by K. S. on 5/9/19Town Hall - New York

I am longtime fan of Anoushka Shankar and have attended many concerts of hers. This was one of her best performances, mostly due to the variety of stories behind each piece of music!

    Great Performance!

by Rod on 5/8/19Town Hall - New York

i'm a big fan of Ravi Shankar, but never had the opportunity to see him live. Had the pleasure of experiencing Anoushka Shankar at Celebrate Brooklyn last year. As great as that show was her performance at The Town Hall was even greater. Hands down, this is one of the greatest performances I have ever enjoyed.
