Anderson .Paak in Concert
Presenting the artist in a top hat and plaid boxer shorts as he plays piano in the surf amid a smattering of objects like an old-school record player, the surreal cover image for Anderson .Paak's breakthrough album perfectly suited its wildly inventive contents. Full of witty, unpredictable songs and styles that ranged from ‘60s soul to ‘90s hip-hop to vanguard R&B, ‘Malibu' became one of 2016's most acclaimed albums, establishing its creator as a maverick whose imagination can seem virtually limitless. Along with a Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, the album earned Anderson .Paak another Grammy nod for Best New Artist along with similar acknowledgements at the Soul Train Music Awards and the BET Hip Hop Awards.
All that marked a long journey from Anderson .Paak's first foray into music, which was playing drums in church growing up in Oxnard, California. After coming to Los Angeles, he sought to establish himself as a session musician while creating his own sounds under the moniker Breezy Lovejoy. His fortunes rose when he began working for Shafiq Husayn of Sa-Ra, the revered L.A. hip-hop duo and production team. His new confidence inspired him to drop his former handle in favor of Anderson .Paak, a stylized version of his real name. The buzz got louder with the release of his wildly diverse debut, ‘Venice' (2014), and his contributions to albums by Dr. Dre and The Game. And while he fully proved his capabilities with ‘Malibu,' it was ‘Yes Lawd!' (2016) by NxWorries – his duo with producer Knxwledge – as well as shows with his band The Free Nationals that confirmed he's just as compelling with close collaborators on hand as when he's pursuing his singular vision.
His third album and first since signing to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment, ‘Oxnard' sees Anderson .Paak introduce yet more colors in his palette, beginning with Technicolor textures, carnivalesque soundscape, and his own exuberant flow in "Bubblin'," the album's first single. And with his return to stages with The Free Nationals, Anderson .Paak is ready to make good on his reputation as one of the exciting new talents in hip-hop and R&B.
Anderson Paak is uber talented. I give him two big thumbs up.
The show was incredible in every way. Anderson's live vocals will blow you away and his energy on the stage has no limit. The Free Nationals are of course also amazingly talented and I loved the way the additional musicians and background vocals/dancers brought it all together. I seriously can't wait to see another show from .Paak!
The music, lights and whole atmosphere was very psychedelic and happy. Made me think what a Sly and the Family Stone show would be like around 1969. Anderson is the real deal.
Absolutely amazing, Anderson .Paak is better live than on album. Worth a 6 hour drive!
It was a very upbeat show! The crowd was really into him and his band, the connection was so positive. One of the highlights was when he asked how many people were there with their parents, and how many parents were their with their children. I was surprised to see how diverse the crowd was. It hit home because my daughter and I flew from 2 different states to see them. We had a ball! Seattle was a great place to see the show.
Amazing show. The music was absolutely incredible and he spoke so directly to the crowd that it felt very personal. I love the chemistry he has with his fans. And the pace of the show was great! The extra stuff like the fireworks and flames was crazy cool and the light show was awesome too! He has so much energy and love for everyone, I had the time of my life!
The venue was great! Large area! Bathroom and bar area were both easy to get to! Stage was amazing! Anderson .Paak was amazing he is a very talented artist! One of my favorite! However I was quite disappointed to have missed Thundercat perform. I thought Earlsweatshirt was opening mostly because of how it was advertised. Other than that it was great!
Anderson was lively, talented, and sounded better than any other performer I have seen to this date! But the set up of this venue made it hard to see anything at all if you’re shorter than 5’ 4”. Side note: I wish I would have known that I’d be standing on concrete for 4 hours or I’d have brought different shoes. My feet were toast which made it hard to enjoy the show. But that’s on me. Other than that the Venue was clean, had a nice beer and alcohol section with seating, and plenty of bathrooms. I will say canned wine should not be that expensive.
i’ve been going to shows for about 20 years. this was by far the best. the energy level was through the roof. anderson.paak is an amazing musician and wields a commanding stage presence. i will probably be grabbing tickets any time he comes around.
The energy level never dipped from the opening beat to the encore. The Mac Miller mentions warmed my heart (and made me teary eyed). The trumpet player can get it. The random Pony and California love throw backs were tight. The lights, the lasers and the stage design were all well thought out and fun without being distracting. Loved it.
Super fun show. Dance, dance, dance!! Great stage and venue!
Anderson .Paak puts on the best live show in the game. Period!
Anderson Paak and The Free Nationals were awesome it was honestly the best concert I've ever gone to. He even came down out of the stage and performed part of a song just walking around the GA area and went into the seat section to dance with some people. It was an unforgettable experience can't wait for his next concert.
Thundercat was an awesome opener and Anderson was next level entertainment. Paak sang while drumming, interacted with the crowd, and put on an extremely entertaining show. Worth every penny.
It was much more than we expected. Thanks so much Anderson and Free Nationals!!
Anderson had such an amazing stage presence. Every time i thought the show was almost over, he'd get on the drums to play again. Hands down one of the best concerts I've been to.
I had the most amazing time, sound was great, my seat was perfect! Anderson.Paak did the damn thang, opening acts were amazing! I would definitely see him again!!!! ☆☆☆☆☆
This concert was awesome from beginning to end! Extraordinary job putting it together, the energy from the performance was was cool and chill leading up to Anderson Paak electrifying segment. He is definitely an artist that I will continue to support. If you have the opportunity to go, don't miss out!!
I never heard of the Earl Sweatshirt not Thundercat prior to the show. Both were decent. AP was amazing. The show was very well produced and coordinated. You could tell he gave the crowd everything he had. The energy was so good. The venue was clean and I felt safe. Merch was very expensive, of course. Didn’t stop me from getting an AP tee! :-) I would see him again and again!
Hands down one of the best performers of this generation
