ANA TIJOUX IN CONCERT:

French-Chilean musician Ana Tijoux first rose to prominence in the late '90s as the female emcee of hip hop collective Makiza, but lately it's her fiercely original solo work that's earning her acclaim. Tijoux's smoky voice, Latin-inspired beats, and taste for deeply personal lyrical imagery have earned her global popularity, and she counts luminaries like Julieta Venegas and Radiohead's Thom Yorke among her fans. In concert she brings her music to life with energy and swagger, rapping and singing alongside a full band as she delivers catchy cuts like "1977" and "Vengo". Tijoux's sound and energy are all her own, and she treats ticket buyers to powerful, bounce-worthy performances every time she takes the stage.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Ana Tijoux was born in Lille, France to two Chilean exiles who had fled the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. She became interested in hip hop and started rapping at age 11, and by her late teens she had formed her first group Los Gemelos. In 1997 she launched the hip hop collective Makiza, a four-piece that quickly achieved success with the release of their debut album Vida Salvaje. The group signed to Sony in 1999 and released their sophomore album Aerolineas Makiza, a massive success that spawned several hits including "La Rosa de los Vientos". Tijoux released two more albums with the band before leaving to focus on her solo career in 2006. She made her debut in 2007 with the album Kaos, but it was 2009's 1977 LP that really broke things wide open. Thom Yorke called the album's title track his favorite song of the summer, and MTV Iggy put her at the top of their list of "Best New Female Emcees Dominating Mics Everywhere". Since then she has released three more albums to critical acclaim including 2014's Vengo, a Grammy-nominated tour de force that features heavily during her upbeat performances on tour.

She is a great entertainer and amazing to watch on stage. She is so beautiful and her songs are brilliant. Her sounds are so unique and something that sounds familiar yet like nothing I've ever heard before. I loved everything about her performance and the opener was great too.

    Ana Tijoux is fantastic

by yajuu on 7/18/12Brighton Music Hall - Boston

This was a Monday night and small crowd but Ana Tijoux was extremely professional and interacted with the crowd making it feel really intimate. After vocals were drowned out in the first track they adjusted and the rest of the show sounded great. I think Ana Tijoux is one of the best artists few people in the US are aware of. Her music sounds great whether you understand a lick of spanish or not.
