Amaarae, born Ama Serwah Genfi, is a Ghanaian-American singer who was raised between Atlanta, New Jersey and Accra. Her boundary-pushing blend of alternative, pop, R&B and Afrobeats has created a wholly unique sonic palette on projects like her debut album, 2020’s The Angel You Don’t Know. With that album, Amaarae earned her breakout hit on charts across the globe in the now-platinum Moliy collaboration “Sad Girlz Luv Money.” The Afropop banger went viral on TikTok after Grammy winner Kali Uchis jumped on the official remix, and scored Amaarae her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as her first Top 10 hit on the World Digital Songs Sales chart. The singer’s sophomore album (and major-label debut after signing with Interscope Records), Fountain Baby, was released in the summer of 2023 and features singles “Reckless & Sweet,” “Co-Star” and “Wasted Eyes.” It was praised as among the best albums of the year by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone and The New Yorker. On her 2025 album BLACK STAR, Amaarae presents her boldest mix of global sonics yet, fully sending up her Ghanaian roots as a rallying cry for youth culture around the world. Featuring legendary artists such as Charlie Wilson and Naomi Campbell, as well as current stars like PinkPantheress and Bree Runway, BLACK STAR is a diaspora-hopping, futuristic statement of cultural pride through an ever-shifting palette of ghettotech, house, techno, baile funk, and African dance genres. Amaarae debuted songs from BLACK STAR live at Coachella in 2025, where she became the first Ghanaian artist to ever grace that stage.
