UNC Tar Heels at Kenan Memorial Stadium

Chapel Hill, NC, is home to the University of North Carolina and one of the premier teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels play at Kenan Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1927, and after recent renovations has a current capacity of 50,500. Originally named after local industrialist William Rand Kenan Sr., the stadium was re-dedicated in honor of his son William R. Kenan Jr. in 2018. In 2019, legendary head coach Mack Brown returned to the school where he first gained national prominence, leading the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1997 before winning the 2005 BCS National Championship with Texas.

UNC Tar Heels Football History

The University of North Carolina first fielded a varsity football team in 1888. John Heisman credited UNC with throwing the first forward pass in college football during an 1895 game against Georgia, leading to a touchdown which clinched a 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs. North Carolina has won nine conference championships: four in the Southern Conference, and five in the ACC, the most recent occurring in 1980. Many legendary players have played for the Tar Heels, including defensive ends William Fuller and Julius Peppers, and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Chris Hanburger. In 2017, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was selected with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, after throwing for 3,748 yards and 30 touchdowns in his junior season.

UNC's biggest rivalry by far is against the Duke Blue Devils, dating as far back as 1888 when Duke University was known as Trinity College. Since 1948, both teams have contested for the Victory Bell, which is painted in the winning team's color after each game. North Carolina also has spirited rivalries against its other in-state rivals, North Carolina State and Wake Forest, and participates in the South's Oldest Rivalry against the University of Virginia, which dates to 1892. North Carolina occasionally faces former ACC opponent South Carolina in the Battle of the Carolinas, with UNC beating the Gamecocks 24-20 in the opening week of 2019.

    Good time

by Mikey63 on 12/31/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

It seems every year this bowl game has a great match-up resulting in a close game. I was disappointed that at least 1/3 of the stadium was empty...maybe lower ticket prices will result in larger crowds and therefore more overall income in concessions and overall ticket sales. I try to go to different bowl games each year (this was my 8th different bowl game) and this facility provided for a very enjoyable experience.

Meineke Car Care Bowl in Style!

by carolinaheelsgirl on 12/31/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

Other than the fact that the Heels lost by 2 points, my husband and I were impressed by this event. Our seats in the club section were extremely comfortable. We have season tickets to the Tar Heel football games, but never get to enjoy the luxury of backs on our seats or being able to walk about 50 feet to get some snacks with virtually no line. Being 8 months pregnant, this game was so much fun because of the comfort. A win would have made it perfection!

    Good Value

by alanenc on 12/29/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

Good opportunity to see a bowl game outside of your typical areas. Cheap seats are a good value but seats are sold in clusters to give the impression of a full venue. We were stuck in an almost full section of rowdy college kids, but we dodged the ushers to sit in an empty section. Wish there was some sort of brochure or giveaway to differentiate this event from a Panthers game and to have as a souvenier.

    great game, bad ending

Other than the final score, this was the perfect game to take my son to see his first college football game.

    Busted Bowl

by blueheel on 12/28/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

RBC Pep rally was in a mud hole. Could not visit vendors without getting muddy. The emcee was partial to Pittsburgh and left when the UNC band played. The day after Christmas is a terrible choice for a game date. This was extremely obvious with all of the empty seats in the upper deck. When the band played for half-time, the acoustics were terrible and even in the lower area it was not even audible. Plus, the Pittsburgh band did not even come on the field. Fans did not seem welcome in the arena. It is just another event for Charlotte not very special or exciting. UNC played the usual game and threw the timely and costly interception.

    Meineke Car Care Bowl

by ExLoyalPatron on 12/28/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

Our family has attended each of the bowl games in Charlotte since they began. This was our worst experience by far. The fans in our area were drunk, vulgar, hostile, inconsiderate and overwhelmingly provocative. After repeated requests to tone down their comments and language we were met with more of the same to the point of confrontation and moving to a different area of the stadium. Additionally $20 to park is ridiculous. I doubt we will attend what use to be a family holiday event for us.
