Nebraska-Omaha Basketball at Baxter Arena
Just in time for Nebraska-Omaha basketball's move to Division 1 came the opening of Baxter Arena, which replaced the old Omaha Civic Auditorium as the team's home base. Though Baxter Arena was built with the school's hockey team in mind, the basketball team plies its craft each winter as well.
Nebraska-Omaha Basketball History
The University of Nebraska-Omaha sports teams go by the easier-to-say Omaha Mavericks moniker, but it's Nebraska through and through. The men's basketball team is a fresh addition to Division 1 of the NCAA, having begun the four-year transition period from Division 2 in 2011, completing it in time for the 2015-2016 season.
The Mavericks joined the Summit League, one of the many conferences in Division 1 that has roots in the Midwest. Among the immediate rivals for the Mavericks were four schools in the nearby Dakotas, as well as schools in Indiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Illinois.
The decision to jump up a division hasn't paid dividends for the Mavericks on the court. The team has yet to win more than 18 games in any season since the transition, though they have been competitive in conference play each year since arriving. More than that, the team now has a tangible goal that would increase their national profile: making the NCAA Tournament.
The school does have a history of success at Division 2, where it played before the 2011-2012 season. The Mavericks made three regional semifinals in their history, as well as three other trips to the regional quarterfinals in the Division 2 tournament. It might take some time, but they certainly will be looking to replicate that success at the top level of college basketball. That will start with the Summit League tournament, the winner of which gets entry into the Big Dance. The Mavericks might be new to Division 1, but if they can get settled in and recruit strongly, they could be a force to be reckoned with out of the Midwest.

by 2571 on 12/19/16Baxter Arena - OmahaI'm a big college basketball fan so watching any game is fun for me. However, they lost my ticket order at Will Call and had to print me up two new ones. I had to stand around for awhile and wait. Not a huge deal, but why did I even do will-call? I don't know.

by ConnZag3 on 1/4/16Baxter Arena - OmahaI've been to events all across the country and have never experienced a ticket setup as poor as here at Baxter Arena. I showed up 20 minutes before the event to pick up the tickets I ordered through Ticketmaster at will call to find out there's no separate will call window at this arena so I had to wait in a line of probably 75-100 people to get to the ticket window to pick up my tickets. When I get to the window, the person at the window could not find my will call tickets and tried to ask a couple of his colleagues for help with little or no response from them as they managed their own windows. Finally, after getting my name wrong twice and me showing him my order on my phone, he had to reprint me new tickets in order to get into the game. This entire process took at least 30 minutes and I missed the first 4 minutes of the game because of this. There were probably no more than 1,000-1,500 people in the building for this game. I shudder to think of how big a debacle this arena is when there's a full house for a hockey game or other event.

by MavFanFavorite on 11/18/15Baxter Arena - OmahaThe game was awesome. Good for UNO to win their first game in the Baxter Arena. Comfortable padded seating. Little wider than the normal seating you find at Century Link Center. My only complaint is we bought lower bowl tickets for $24 and because it was not a sold out crowd, people were sitting wherever they wanted. People were actually sitting in our seating. We moved down the row since there was available seating, but the fact is no one was checking tickets for the section we bought in.
