The show my husband and I attended was a matinee and I felt like I was attending a rehearsal for the real show. The show was precluded by the musicians wandering around the stage checking papers on music stands and drinking out of water bottles. There was no lead-up to the entrance of the singers. They just ran out and started to sing.
What would I have liked to have seen? I would have liked a closed curtain prior to the show start (we don't need to see the prep work). Maybe a dark room and hearing harmonized vocals with the curtain opening to a lighted backdrop screen (there was a screen available) of a dark street with a street lamp). The singers could be silhouetted at the stage front. The lights come on and they perform! But, that wasn't the case. After the first song, one the singers announced that he needed to adjust sound system so that the piano could be heard (shouldn't somebody have checked that before?)
There was mixed enthusiasm in the group. I loved 'The Temptations' style dancing, but one the guys didn't seem to be enjoying it and gave minimized actions. Who knows, maybe, he wasn't feeling well or had strained a muscle. The guys could all sing, but there were quite a few 'off tune' moments. When they would need a drink of water, 3 of the singers would go to the back of the stage, near the musicians and stand around a stool that had bottles of water and drink and sing.
There were definitely some enjoyable moments and I could probably have overlooked most of the faults I have with the production if they had presented us with a show that looked and sounded like it had been performing for over 10 years.
