Tower of Power on Tour

When Tower of Power took the stage at The Fillmore in San Francisco for their 40th anniversary show in 2008, it was as full circle as live music moments get. A recorded introduction by the dearly departed, legendary promoter Bill Graham — who gave the band their big break and signed them to his label in the late '60s — kicked off the energetic musical explosion that Tower of Power have never stopped bringing to the stage. The Tower of Power five-piece horn section, led by founding members Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, has been the driving force behind a group with over 60 touring members in its history. The R&B funk and soul revue also features furious percussionists, guitar, keys and more vocal blends than you can imagine. The elite collection of musicians have never stopped touring, and whether at a casino theater or a classic concert hall, a Tower of Power show is always gonna be a kickin' good time. Their Oakland-born sound emerged in 1968, and even after 50 years their shows still manage to feel contemporary.

Tower of Power in Concert

In 1968, Oakland's Emilio Castillo and Stephen "Doc" Kupka formed a band with the goal of playing at San Francisco's iconic Fillmore theater. By 1970, Tower of Power were not only on the stage, but signed to Bill Graham's San Francisco Records for their debut album East Bay Grease. When they moved over to Warner Bros Records in 1972, they started to leave a timeless mark beyond the Bay Area with the release of now-classic albums — Bump City, Tower of Power, Urban Renewal and more. Throughout their 19 albums, including 2018's Soul Side of Town, the band have covered every inch of R&B, soul and funk, constantly evolving and paving the way for many other artists.

Tower of Power and Jordan John were fabulous!

by Lisa on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

Great concert. Could use more shade. Irritating that the real bathrooms were off-limits to anyone but VIP. The rest of us had to use out houses only. That needs to be changed. But a great concert.

    TOP Murietta concert 4/21 Excellent

by Pam T on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

First ever Jazz/Blues Festival in new Murietta amphitheater and park last weekend. Beautiful venue. Sound and light system rivals major concert sites. Add Tower of Power’s long-standing reputation for outstanding rhythm section and horns, and you can imagine what a great concert this was. Will definitely watch for and attend future concerts there.

    Longevity for a reason

by Rob C on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

56 years strong and just as entertaining. Younger lead singer, Jordan John, fits in very nicely. The venue was spectacular as well.

    TOP Fan

by Grego on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

Seems like a nice enough venue. I’ve been a Tower of Power Fan and XMusician myself since 1970. My only complaint is they were set up too far back on stage. They would have projected better if much closer to the front of stage. I know equipment logistics for several groups is part of the process but the headliner should get priority. They were against the back wall. Thats my 2cents

    Was disappointed

by None on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

I grew up listening to TOP. Whenever they are in town, I make it a point to see them. So, I was excited I'd got my ticket. But was disappointed. Although the horn section and band were great, the lead singer was NOT a good fit. He was a good singer but his voice was to high for the band. Also his appearance, well he looked like he could of been the grandson of the youngest member of the bband. So, it took away from what I felt the nostalgic of TOP. Thank you.

by OscarT on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

I saw Tower of Power back in high school. Almost 50 years ago… Seems like yesterday. They sounded awesome, love the brass section and that baritone sax just brings it all together…. Congrats!!

    Jazz and Blues Festival

by Eddi on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

Overall a good experience. All the groups were great. Tower of Power never disappoints!! Venue was good but should allow for additional exit areas and more choice of beer and alcohol, not just for those in the VIP area.

by Gogo on 4/24/24Murrieta Town Square Amphitheater - Murrieta

First time at this venue in Murrieta and loved it! TOP was excellent and took me back to my years in high school in the Bay Area. Will see them again if possible. Love Emilio and grateful he formed this band!
