THIS IS THE SHOW THE WORLD HAS BEEN WAITING FOR.

by HTTYDFAN on 7/25/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

As a huge SpongeBob fan myself, this was like actually watching an actual episode of SpongeBob. I loved how they included all of the known characters as well as Patchy the Pirate. This is a show for anyone who grew up watching this unforgettable show. Ethan Slater was born to play America's favorite sponge. Danny Skinner and Lili Cooper were perfect as Patrick and Sandy. Gavin Lee was phenomenal as Squidward. I feel optimistic and positive that this show is heading for Broadway. After seeing this show, it will really make every day feel like the "Best Day Ever."

    Fun for the family

by MandysMac on 7/18/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I bought these tickets for my daughter and was thinking I could reluctantly stomach this for her sake. I am soooo not a fan of the TV cartoon. Imagine my surprise when I ended up thoroughly enjoying myself! It was witty, funny, colorful, fun..... we had a great time and I am so glad I went! My daughter loved it too. I am glad we caught this before it left Chicago.

Excellent... better than I had hoped

by MattPofIndy on 7/18/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Though I was simply hoping for something that my 6 year old son would enjoy, I got that and so much more. It was very entertaining, but stayed true to everything the cartoon represents as well. Each of the characters were cast very well and each actor/actress were fantastic in their role(s). I would recommend this to anyone who is a child or child at heart... and strongly recommend it to anyone who has ever like SpongeBob.

I smiled through the whole show!!!

by KatherineQ on 7/17/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I was curious about this show as I heard several good bands wrote the music and my curiousity won me over. I decided I'm going and I asked a friend and she was up for it at the last minute. Thank goodness we went! It was such a fun show. I've seen the cartoon a few times so I knew who the characters were. It didn't matter if you had kids or not because it was an entertaining and creative show even for adults. I realized near the end that I had a smile on my face the whole time. I thought the ingenuity with the costumes and the scenery were so fascinating! I loved that. I told my mother about the creativity of it all and she told her friends so they added it to their New York City trip agenda as a result. If you are looking for something fun and happy to see, I highly recommend it! I'm just so happy I saw it! What a shame it would have been to miss it.

    Spongebob WOW

by Skiptickle on 7/14/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

What a visual feast! Never seen such a colorful production. Think psychedelic tiki bar meets a neon lit aquarium. The sets and costumes were amazing. The music was really good also. Very funny and amusing show.

    Spongebob Was Absorbing!!!

by DandyD on 7/13/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I flew all the way from Northern California to Chicago on the spur-of-the-moment to catch The Spongebob Musical in its very first incarnation. I was not disappointed in the least. The sets, costumes, lighting, cast, choreography and score were all wonderful. A tip of the hat to director Tina Landau and her production team for bringing the world of Bikini Bottom to joyous life for all to see. Kids will love the songs, pace and various characters ... and adults will as well. Whoever thought that impending doom could be so much fun? Rhetorical question. I plan to see it next year when it opens in NYC. When the tour comes to San Francisco I'll take my theatre-going group to see it as well. We all need a little Spongebob now.

    A Spectacular Production

by Anonymous on 7/13/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This was an absolutely enjoyable show for not only children and fans of Spongebob, but anyone who loves theater. The actors who portrayed Spongebob and Squidworth were phenomenal. The set design was fantastic and the directing was spot on. My only reason for not giving the show 5 stars, the songs were not memorable or catchy. Usually when leaving a musical, there is at least one song that plays in your head for the rest of the day. Although Squidworths song was a show stopper, I still couldn't tell you how the song went.

    Meh

by FanofMagic on 7/13/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The sets were excellent and the lighting was as good as I have seen. Some of the costumes were excellent. The story, however, was weak and it is difficult to overcome a weak story (the show suffers from an identity crisis--is it geared for kids or general audiences). Otherwise, the voices were uneven, the score was uneven, and the acting was just mixed. I think they are in for a very short run on Broadway and that is not a bad thing.

    Spongebob was nonstop entertainment

by MusicGal626 on 7/13/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Loved this so much I came back with my nephew, a lifelong Spongebob fan. The stage adaptation is very clever, and absolutely true to the spirit of the original cartoon. The cast is unbelievably energetic, and spot-on with their voice and gesture characterizations. For me, the most gratifying part was that the good old-fashioned tap dance number generated the most excitement, getting its own standing ovation, and the audience screamed approval when the kick-line formed. The Spongebob Musical is such a satisfying blend of contemporary humor and good old-fashioned stagecraft, with nothing that will make parents cringe, but plenty to amuse all ages.
