About

Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium

The University of Tennessee is home to one of the great programs in the Southeastern Conference, and, really, all of college football. Tennessee produced an explosive and exciting brand of football in its first year under head coach Josh Heupel. The Volunteers set eight single-season school records on the offensive side of the ball and ranked top-10 nationally in team tackles for loss. The 2021 Vols orchestrated the nation's "fastest" offense, averaging 2.99 plays per minute while owning the FBS' seventh-best scoring offense at 39.3 points per game.

Tennessee returns eight starters on offense, including four offensive linemen. Defensively, the squad returns seven starters from an attacking unit that ranked second in the SEC and seventh in the FBS for tackles for a loss.

The Tennessee Volunteers have had some of the greatest football players of all time suit up for them, including defensive end Reggie White from 1980 to 1983 and quarterback Peyton Manning from 1994 to 1997 to most recent Derek Barnett, Cordarrelle Patterson and Alvin Kamara. The Vols play in Neyland Stadium in Knoxville, Tennessee, which opened as Shields-Watkins Field in 1921 and has a current capacity of 101,915.

Tennessee Volunteers Football History

The University of Tennessee first fielded a varsity football team in 1891 and became a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Robert Neyland was a major architect both literally and figuratively in the Volunteers' success in the 20th century and beyond. A brigadier general during World War II, Neyland coached Tennessee from 1926 to 1934, from 1936 to 1940 and from 1946 to 1952, leading the Vols to four national championships, five SEC championships and two Southern Conference championships. Neyland is not only the namesake of Tennessee's stadium; his input in renovating the field's infrastructure has been the basis for every major phase of renovation since the 1960s.

Johnny Majors was a star at halfback for Tennessee in the '50s, and after leading Pitt to a national championship in 1976, returned to Knoxville as a coach from 1977 to 1992. Phillip Fulmer then went on to lead the Volunteers to a BCS National Championship in 1998, as quarterback Tee Martin and wide receiver Peerless Price helped defeat Florida State 23-16 in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl to cap off an undefeated season. While the Tennessee-Alabama game is not always played on the "Third Saturday of October," the name is synonymous with one of the most storied rivalries in the SEC. Tennessee also has historic rivalries against the University of Kentucky, University of Florida and in-state Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt.

    Rocky Top

    by J67 on 10/3/23Neyland Stadium - Knoxville

If you have never experienced a football game in Neyland Stadium put it on your bucket list. Something about singing Rocky Top with 100,000 screaming fans gets your blood flowing. Yes it’s a big crowd but don’t let that deter you.

    Money spent better elsewhere

by Rocky on 9/12/23Neyland Stadium - Knoxville

Almost impossible to get to the seats in D through the tunnel from Gate 24. I am of average weight, but the seating space was tiny. Great view from the seats, but you had to maneuver by 12 people in each direction to get in or out. The game delay was inexcusable. No possible way for that crowd to find shelter. Paid $300 to watch 2 weak teams. Last game of the season for me.

Great seats @ Nissan Stadium to watch the Vols!

by BAintheBORO on 9/8/23Nissan Stadium - Nashville

We used 335/F seats 3-5. These seats are on the 50 yard line, you have a terrific view of the entire game. It was VERY sunny and hot in September. These seats back up against a wall - Pros: Noone behind you - you can stand up or sit on the seats or stand in the seats with no issue - HUGE Pro: The game started at 11am. By halftime, we were mostly in the shade. This was a huge bonus. My friend has Titans PSLs in this row and loves them. I'd sit here anytime.

    Awesome Experience

by Tngirl on 9/5/23Nissan Stadium - Nashville

Enjoyed Nashville hospitality, enjoyed the football game, was very surprised there was no food or drinks for sale outside the stadium, unless I didn't see them. The Nissan stadium really needs to fix the wifi issue, it was impossible to open or send anything. Other wise great day!
