I enjoyed it tremendously. I loved that the instrumentation did not overpower the singers, but was very pleasant and energizing. The singing was lovely. I just wished I spoke Finnish so I could enjoy the words as well as the sound. Very powerful. Thank you! It all made me feel extremely happy.
Duluth was so lucky to be the venue for Samuli Edelman's first appearance on an American stage. He chose a personal and emotional tribute to his father, a composer who translated Shakespeare sonnets to Finnish. Performing entirely in Finnish with a few introductory words in perfect English, Edelman brought the audience along on his nostalgic journey with his late father. All love songs, Samuli's gentle voice was in contrast to his harder rock songs with with some audience members may have been familiar. He was accompanied by a pianist and sax/clarinet player, and later joined by singer Eeppi Ursin, New York-based Finnish singer and pianist and Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year for 2022.
