I left at intermission because it was so bad, confusing, had no clue what was going on and neither did others in audience I chatted with....
I hate to give bad reviews, but don't go see this. It is confusing, miscast (a policeman love interest who is definitely in his 30's is the weird love interest of the main character who is clearly in her 70's), and quite befuddled. The highlight was the "murderous patient"who was very well acted - but I kid you not, when you leave they give you a synopsis of what actually happened - BECAUSE it is that convoluted. When they sell tickets, they make it look like the seats are sold - but there were literally only 30 people in what looked to me on the seating chartlike an almost sold out house when i bought the tickets. The lead actress in the role is in the Guiness book of records for how long she has played this part. That's the claim to fame. I love off Broadway, but skip this one.
I am perplexed as to the number of performances this production has completed. The script and acting are something one would expect in a high school production where the assumption was “don’t take this seriously.” Without question, the worst on or off Broadway play I have ever suffered through.
I was waiting for a camera crew to come tell me it was a prank. The leading lady rushed through her lines without even pausing for a breath, punctuation, or between thoughts. Her voice had very little emotion or inflection. I think she might be bored with playing the same role for over 36 years. The story line was also very hard to follow. I left early because I didn't want my face of disgust and confusion to bother the actors. I don't know how this play has been on for so many years. It was a disappointing birthday, but at least I got to laugh about how horrible it was.
I love that it's a little theater and the fact that the audience is so close to the actors makes it so intimate. The closeness to the stage, allows the audience to hear and feel everything, and with a play like this one, the senses are on the surface. You won't get bored, the motion of the actors accross the stage and the energy of the plot, make you want more. Fabulous play! Recommended!
The "Perfect Crime"is that this show is quite possibly the worst we have ever seen. The theater is a dump as well. Don't waste your time or money!
The storyline has great potential, however the show itself is poorly delivered making it confusing and difficult to follow. The fact that they hand out a sheet explaining what happened at the end just demonstrates how difficult audiences find it to understand what the hell is going on, and rather than giving everyone the answer it would be better if they looked more closely at how they actually deliver the play. The set and theatre were good, just a shame about the show!
The venue was not good. The seating was just barely sloped so it was difficult to see past the heads in front of us. Couldn't see the actors when they were sitting down. The story, where do I start. The scenes were disjointed and hard to follow. Leaving the theatre, we were handed a two-page hard-to-read summary of each scene, when each took place (present day or in past), characters' motives... a lot like an Agatha Christie film. I was glad for explanations but that shows you how many others must have commented similarly so that there was a need (obligation) to attendees to provide the long summation upon exit. We could tell the actors were talented but the time, effort, and money we put into attending was so not worth it.
Honestly, I bought tickets without reading the reviews.. and wow next time I’ll definitely be reading reviews before buying tickets to shows. I ended up leaving during intermission, the acting was all over the place and It didn’t make any sense what so ever. Maybe towards the end of the show things would of came together but I honestly couldn’t not spend anymore of my time while on vacation watching the show.
