New England Patriots History

Originally known as the Boston Patriots, the New England Patriots were the eighth and final franchise to join the American Football League in 1959. After joining the NFL during the 1970 AFL/NFL merger, they changed their name and moved to Foxborough in 1971.

Producing some of the league's greatest players — from AFL MVPs Gino Cappelletti and Jim Nance, to future Pro Football Hall of Famers John Hannah, Mike Haynes and Andre Tippett — the Patriots have fielded more than a few successful teams. The 1978 team won 11 games while setting a then-NFL rushing record that stood for 40-plus years with 3,165 yards. That year, the team's 11 wins tied the franchise record and earned the Patriots their second division title in team history and an opportunity to host their first home playoff game.

On Jan. 21, 1994, Kraft bought the Patriots from St. Louis native James Orthwein, keeping the franchise in New England. The Patriots went to the playoffs four out of the next five seasons and have become a modern-era dynasty, recording more than 20 seasons with at least 10 wins since Kraft purchased the team. Under the leadership of quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots dominated the division from 2001 to 2018, making nine Super Bowl appearances and winning six championships.

The Patriots are currently tied with the Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL with six. The Patriots hold the NFL record for the most Super Bowl appearances with 11.

The Patriots’ home-field success has helped power a dynasty that has consistently propelled the Patriots into the playoffs. Since 2002, Gillette Stadium has hosted 23 playoff games, including seven AFC Championship Games.

    Great team, great venue!

    by klynch129 on 12/23/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

I took my daughter to our first Patriots game, and it was amazing. Gillette Stadium is fantastic, well run and plenty of amenities available. Even though our seats were way up high, we had an excellent view of the field. The announcer also does a great job of involving the crowd! I will definitely plan to go again.

    Pats game

by PetePatsFan on 12/23/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

We had a great time at the game but our seats sucked! We were next to the aisle and the landing that had plexiglass blocked our view of the field.

    Worth the Trip

by StadiumTraveler on 11/11/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Of the 22 NFL stadiums I've attended, this was one of the absolute best. Architecturally, it is only behind Seattle, and even though the team I support isn't a good one (based on their record), the fans were surprisingly polite to me. My team only visits Gillette Stadium once every eight years, but I'm already looking forward to my next trip there. One word of advice, though--the parking situation is very difficult, so get there a few hours early and be prepared to wait a few hours once the game is over.

    Great Game, decent seats

    by Hammond1973 on 11/11/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Had a great time with my family at this event. Great weather, good seats, Patriots won, what more can you ask for? Well maybe a slightly less obscured view, but still had a good time!

    Bucket List Item

by pwjp on 10/28/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

This was a bucket list item for one of us who just happened to turn 65 the next day. Our seats were really high up, but still had a good view of the field. Dress in layers. It started out with a little drizzle, but very comfortable, then got a little cooler with wind, then the sun came out. You get the idea. The fans are the best, friendly and, of course, we were all bound by the goal of WINNING! The food and drinks are really expensive, so be prepared, but the experience is well worth it. I wish we were closer to go to more games. The Patriots Train from Boston South Station is a great way to go too.

    1st Patriots Game at Gillette

by SeattlePatsFan on 10/28/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Words cannot begin to describe my experience at Gillette Stadium. As a life long Patriots fan, this was definitely a thing to do on my bucket list. From the stadium, to Patriot Place, to pre and post game tailgating, this was a truly unique experience. Being from Seattle, I had a chance to soak everything in, and I did. I did the Hall at Patriot Place, and visited the various shops and restaurants. Went early to the game, met some NFL Network Analysts, and watched the Greatest QB of All-Time do his thing, yet again. It was awesome, the atmosphere, the fans, the staff, everyone. I will be going back very soon.

    Jaguars @ Patriots

by murphal on 10/1/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Atmosphere very good and louder then expected which was great. High scoring was a bonus. Stadium itself is very good and when at ground it is excellant and would highly recommend a game. Used Rallybus to get to/from stadium as this would give time before the game at the stadium. Thought of using Patriots Train but time is very tight getting to stadium. However, its the train system i have a negative about. For such a high class stadium and event with a train station available, i cannnot understand why there is not more trains put on to cater for the event. 1 every 30 minutes from 3 hours prior to game would be normal in every other stadium worldwide. Would be a huge improvement. No trains puts massive pressure on roads and caused a 22 mile trip on good roads to take over 2 hours !!!

    Should have known better

by Anonymous on 9/13/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

Patriots fans are seriously the worst I've encountered and I've been to a lot of stadiums, threats of physical violence because of the colors on your jersey? Third and last visit to Gillette, not worth it for A GAME!!

    Not an affordable family outting!

by Olevroc on 9/7/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

The bag policy was so rigid - it became perfectly clear that is was a gimmick or ploy to have to purchase one of their "clear" bags. My pocketbook was 1/4" too long and they would not allow me to enter with it. However, I was able to purchase a very large clear bag and placed my pocketbook inside that bag and was allowed to enter with it. Not quite sure how this makes "safety" sense but definitely makes "dollar" sense in their pocket. I had read the bag policy prior to entering and their 7 inch rule was not clearly stated on the website. It merely had a picture of a hand and a bag that could fit inside the hand - which mine did. Very disappointed in this policy especially because of the already ridiculous costs of tickets and food items. Then to add in this, it was my 11 year old son's very FIRST Patriots game - and Brady isn't there - fine he doesn't play - but not even THERE! Very disappointing to fans all around.

Tom Brady is no show for fans

by Mesanatic on 9/6/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

September 3, 2015 Tom Brady has NFL 4 game suspension nullified! YES, FINALLY. Fans go to pre season game in force to show our support for Tom B. Banners every where and all cheering for Tom's big win. But Tom Brady doesn't even show up. Seriously? The biggest day for Patriots fans to celebrate our QB being in for whole season and he doesn't come to say, glad to have your support, I'll see you next week for the opener. Couple minutes prior to start or half time was all it takes. Bought my tickets day they went on sale, 7/15/15, so I didn't buy them just to be part of celebrating his win in court, but still, a big let down there. Side note: The parking situation here sucks. The police lining the roadways won't even answer you as to what side you can enter on. Just wave you on and say "keep going", even though traffic is stopped. Not great, 1 1/2 hrs. from RT 495 to parking lot. How about only people with tickets admitted to parking lots.

    Preseason patsies

by CruiserGuy on 9/6/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough

2 hours of weekday commute nightmare, arriving at halftime, only to then watch the third-stringers waltz around like it was their first time in a uniform? It made the $40 parking seem like pretty trivial complaint. With that having been said, it's still a cool way to blow a months rent.

    Waste of time

From now on I will play sports myself instead of watching others play. Why should they have fun while I just sit there eating and getting fat?!

    Awesome Experience

by cptcoolie on 4/27/15Gillette Stadium - Foxborough,

My first Patriots game and it was freezing. The Divisional Playoffs versus the Ravens. The stadium was very impressive and the mood was exciting. Of course, there were a few overzealous fans, but for the most part a lot of class from fans of both teams. As a lifelong Pats fan, I would have preferred the Pats whoop up on the Ravens like they did the Colts the following week, because it would have been a lot less stressful...However, after the game, I realized that I had attended (in my opinion) the Game of the Year! The pats were down 14 points twice in the game, and didn't take the lead until the final 4 minutes...Baltimore came to play and win! Edelman's touchdown pass to Armedola was also a treat to see live! The atmosphere of the game was exciting, fun...I almost didn't realize how cold it was....almost! I plan to attend the season opener...I'll tailgate if I can't get tickets...It is going to be a blast!

Attended 10-16-14 vs. Jets as a birthday gift to myself..solo (still had fun)...and I will never forget it. I had a blast! Got in the game a little late but this was my 1st NFL game ever so why not see your favorite team ON the day of your birthday. I LOVE THE FANS! I have vowed to myself to follow either the team or attend a home game once a year now that I can travel more! Also was my 1st time in Boston; nice city and friendly people! I will be back to see my Super Bowl 49 Champions!!
