Michael Kiwanuka on Tour

Michael Kiwanuka first graced the stage as a solo artist in London at just 22 years old. His smooth, soulful voice quickly won over crowds. Next, with just two EPs under his belt, he found himself supporting Adele on her 2011 world tour and landing slots at festivals around the UK. After releasing his 2012 debut album, Home Again, the singer-songwriter headed off on an extensive world tour that would include performances at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury and other major festivals around the world. Since, he released his second album, Love & Hate, and has spent much of his time on the road. With only a brief break in 2018, Kiwanuka returned to stages across Europe and the U.S. in 2019.

Michael Kiwanuka in Concert

Michael Kiwanuka gives the warm, comforting sound of classic folk, rock and soul a melancholic modern twist — and makes it all feel timeless. The English singer-songwriter, born to Ugandan parents, grew up in London surrounded by music. He listened to Nirvana and Blur, but became most inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Otis Redding. He played in rock bands as a teenager, studied jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and pop at Westminster University. He started making connections in the local music scene, and eventually worked as a session guitarist for English rapper Chipmunk and former Bill Withers drummer James Gadson. Behind the scenes he was working on his own material, writing songs with just an acoustic guitar and recording a few demos. He began playing some small shows, and got the attention of Paul Butler, the frontman of indie rock group The Bees, who offered to produce his first EP. Soon enough, Kiwanuka got signed to independent label Communion Records, which released his debut EP, Tell Me a Tale, and follow-up I'm Getting Ready EP in 2011. From there, Kiwanuka's career went into overdrive. He signed to Polydor Records, toured alongside Adele and was named BBC's Sound of 2012 winner, all as he prepared for the release of his 2012 debut album, Home Again. The album peaked at No. 4 in the UK and No. 86 in the U.S. After a whirlwind world tour, Kiwanuka finally released his 2016 follow-up, Love & Hate, coproduced by Butler and Danger Mouse. The album debuted at No. 1 in the UK and featured hit singles "Cold Little Heart" (which eventually became the opening theme for the HBO series Big Little Lies) and the title track. After another few years, he returned with the disco-infused single "Money," a collaboration with Tom Misch.

    OUTSTANDING performance!!

by Mark on 2/7/20House of Blues Chicago presented by Cricket Wireless - Chicago

If this is a review of the performance, Michael and band were amazing. As for House of Blues in Chicago, it was a bit disorganized but nothing too crazy. Had to get patted down 3 times, once at the entrance, once at the VIP entrance and then AGAIN at the VIP entrance that had a second area to deal with. But, all minor inconveniences when compared to the show itself. VIP seating was nice and we really enjoyed that experience.

    Performer Awesome, Location Awful

by KV SLC on 2/4/20The Depot - Salt Lake City

Apparently it was 18 and over instead of the 21 and over that I'm used to so the smallest part of the club was 21 and over then they only had one bar tender. After entering the club we still had to get into a line where they were only allowing people in as others exited. After we got into that part we had to get into another slow line because they only had one bar tender. After all that we could hardly find anywhere to stand. We ended up watching the entire show on the screen. At least Michael Kiwanuka was great and played 'One More Night' our favorite song.

    Michael Kiwanuka

by KW on 2/3/20The Depot - Salt Lake City

Michael Kiwanuka was phenomenal. However disappointed in The Depot. Since being taken over by Live Nation all the seating has been turned into $100 a seat and there is no more seating. Ridiculous that you have to stand all night or pay $100 to sit. In addition, the bar area upstairs is turned into reserve seating. You can get a drink at the bar but you can’t take it anywhere and again you can’t sit. You’re stuck on the floor and packed in without any means to be able to leave for the restroom or water. 😡 I have to really want to see the act to want to go to this venue again.

    Glad there wasn’t an encore

by Mike on 2/3/20The Depot - Salt Lake City

Love the artist, but songs where too long. I timed several of them, avg 7-8 min long. Venue was too warm, standing room only. 4.5 hours on our feet. We were glad when it was over. The seats on the 3rd floor balcony were 100$ per seat on top of the regular ticket price. Lots of older people who for some odd reason lacked personal space which is a weird thing to say at a standing room only concert but there were a couple of old ladies who kept dancing into me and sticking their phones right next to my face trying to take a video of the stage action. Venue was clean and staff was friendly.

    Great artist, awesome band!

by Inking bees on 1/31/20Commodore Ballroom - Vancouver

Excellent set, just the one you'd wish to see in a Kiwanuka show. I love it when the performers have a dialog with the audience, and not the fake kind of "Hello X-city, it's so good to be here!". It seemed Kiwanuka and the band lead the dialog in a ver genuine manner. Only thing I'd improve was the sound, who could've been more accurate, mainly in high pitches and deep and low bass. All in all an sweet (almost) 2 hours of great music.

Michael Kiwanuka’s voice was absolutely amazing, and his backup singers were incredible as well. I would definitely see him again when he returns to Vancouver!
