Louisiana State University Tigers Football History

Louisiana State University first fielded a football team in 1893, and they were named the Tigers during the 1896 season. Coach Paul Dietzel led LSU to some of their greatest successes in the ’50s, installing a three-platoon system that helped lead the Tigers to their first national title in 1958, while halfback Billy Cannon won the Heisman Trophy playing for the school in 1959. LSU has continued to be a force to be reckoned with in recent years. In 2003, coach Nick Saban led the Tigers to a BCS title, as LSU defeated Oklahoma, 21-14, in the Sugar Bowl.

From 2005 to 2016, coach Les Miles built on the team’s success, earning LSU a reputation for top-notch recruiting. Many Tigers stars who played under Miles have gone on to achieve success in the NFL, including Patrick Peterson, Leonard Fournette and Odell Beckham Jr. The 2007 LSU Tigers became just the second team with two losses to win a national championship, defeating Ohio State 38-24, in the BCS National Championship Game. The 2011 LSU team defeated Alabama, 9-6, in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown in Tuscaloosa, only to lose to the Crimson Tide in the BCS title game. Under coach Ed Orgeron, Miles’ successor, LSU defeated the University of Central Florida, 40-32, in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, giving the UCF Knights their first loss in more than two seasons. The following year, the Tigers went 15-0 and won their fourth national championship, led by future NFL quarterback and LSU’s second Heisman Trophy recipient, Joe Burrow.
