About

Kentucky Wildcats Football History

The University of Kentucky first fielded a football team in 1881, and has consistently competed since the 1891 season. Legendary coach Paul "Bear" Bryant led the Wildcats from 1946 to 1953 and steered Kentucky to a dream season in 1950, where they went 11-1, won the SEC title and defeated the unbeaten Oklahoma Sooners in the Sugar Bowl. The Wildcats also won a share of the 1976 SEC title under coach Fran Curci, and finished 10-1 the next season. Head coach Hal Mumme brought his electric "Air Raid" offense to Kentucky in the late ’90s and early ’00s, which helped quarterback Tim Couch be selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. In 2019, head coach Mark Stoops ensured Kentucky was a force to be reckoned with, installing a hard-hitting defense that produced one of the top prospects for the 2019 NFL Draft in linebacker Josh Allen. Stoops also helped the Wildcats notch two of the team’s four all-time 10-win seasons.

Over the years, Kentucky has had many legendary players, including Pro Football Hall of Famer George Blanda, who played under Bear Bryant, center Dermontti Dawson, wide receiver Randall Cobb and Jared Lorenzen. During the Mark Stoops era, many top players have led the way, including Josh Allen and running back Benny Snell Jr. They both led the Wildcats to a 27-24 victory in the 2019 Citrus Bowl over No. 13 Penn State en route to a No. 12 ranking in the AP poll at the end of the 2018 season.

The Kentucky Wildcats have heated rivalries against SEC East teams Tennessee and Vanderbilt, cross-division foes Mississippi State and and in-state competitors Louisville, who they face annually in the Governor's Cup.

The Cats started off great but after Missouri scored a touchdown on a fake punt, Kentucky never recovered.

A very nice stadium, sure it’s a bit smaller than typical SEC Stadiums but the atmosphere is crazy cool. Great Place to watch a ball game

KY vs FL worth every minute

by Terradactile on 10/3/23Kroger Field - Lexington

First time attending an SEC conference game ever........and since I was rooting for Kentucky, this one did not disappoint! Good to see some physical dominance lead to one team (Florida) not having a chance. No pretending by the Wildcats, they performed awesomely. All of that said, my biggest joy came in learning the FL starting QB was Graham Mertz, the former WI Badger QB. I remember seeing his first ever college game (lived in WI for 32 years) and he played like he was the GOAT.........got my hopes up that WI would finally have a passing game to match their pounding running game. Well, that certainly didn't work out. Great to see the Coach Stoops off season moves are paying great dividends........for this game, namely bringing in Ray Davis.......what a stud! Bottom line, thank you Ticketmaster for making it so easy to attend an SEC game!
