Black Tiger Sex Machine In Concert

Black Tiger Sex Machine cuts an unmistakable profile. There are the masks, for one thing: sleek, stylized feline heads emblazoned with LED eyes glowing white and red. On stage, they seem to float in the darkness, bobbing in time with their slow-motion dubstep beats. The masks are the ultimate proof of the way the Montreal trio has managed to create an entire universe around its menacing brand of bass music. A BTSM concert isn't just a show — it's an adventure in sci-fi world-building.

BTSM — Marc Chagnon, Julien Maranda, and Patrick Barry — got their start in 2011 with the ‘Drama' EP, a slinky fusion of electro house and filter disco, but their music soon turned darker. The ‘Studs, Spikes & Blood' EP from 2012 introduced hints of acid and warehouse rave, and by 2015's "Religion," the group's sound throbbed over lurching dubstep rhythms.

All the while, their live shows were making them a force to be reckoned with, taking them to Electric Forest, Lollapalooza, TomorrowWorld, and other influential electronic music festivals around the globe. In 2016, they put out their debut album ‘Welcome to Our Church' on their own Kannibalen label, their longtime headquarters. They followed that with ‘New Worlds' in 2018, fleshing out a long-running narrative of a zombie apocalypse in songs like "Replicants" and "Artificial Intelligence."

Their masks, fashioned by Montreal industrial designer Gabriel Hebert, place them in the ranks of Daft Punk and deadmau5 — artists with a keen grasp of compelling visual communications. Their live shows are just as spectacular, incorporating MIDI controllers with CDJs and live electronic drum pads.

As BTSM fans (dubbed "the Church") can attest, the group's concerts are enveloping affairs. They may be hard to tear your gaze away from, but the real action is in the heaving, head-banging crowd, where the trio's apocalyptic beats land like the zombie gospel.

    I love you Julien!

by Mimi on 3/21/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

Experience was awesome! BTSM really knows how to do a good show. Bathrooms were accesible and clean, despite the event being super packed, concession stands didn't had a huge line and the food was good. Just wish the Lockers were inside the venue and the teather wasn't so ridiculously strict about the clear bag policy. My backpack was clear with some glitter on it, but still everything inside was visible, and I was denied entrance the first day because my backpack wasn't allowed.

Twenty dollar drinks, no re-entry, and no viable seating

by Mohammad on 3/6/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

I usually spend about $500 a night at these shows and I after 6 visits in the past year, I can’t say I have any reason to continue supporting this venue outside of the large, well-stocked bathrooms. The floors are hard and cold, there is no viable seating, it’s all one level, and most of all outside of parking, the alcohol prices are crazy. We are working class people paying $50 tops for tickets and saving for these shows. People are going to start sneaking stuff in again if the prices stay this high, but I do understand that times are rough for everyone and the staff has to make their money but I guarantee the venue makes a ton. That was over 9000 people! Ticket sales, parking, food and beverage. The money goes somewhere, and it doesn’t seem to be into making it a very livable space for real people anymore.

Only thing is, we’re in our 30’s….no seats our backs were killing us by the end of the night. Other then that it was great.

    Great weekend

by Toolphan on 3/5/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

Such an awesome show!! The Patrick, Julien, and Kekai were all so kind and patient when signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. We really appreciated the availability of the disabled platforms, as my wife is often bound to a wheelchair and I'm just old and always sore. After having a prior negative experience at WAMU, this made up for it. It was well coordinated and staffed.

    Bring back the bleachers

by GX on 3/5/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

I took the bleachers for granted… I wished they were there. I don’t like sitting on the ground if I can help it. There was also a terrible sound echo I noticed on day 2. It sounded like there was a delayed speaker in the very back when I was chilling at the right side bar facing the stage.

Beyond happy 0 regret about making my trip based off this

by Nerdyninja on 3/5/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

Btsm was everything and more I could have hoped for. The music took priority on this trip to seattle from Canada and the speakers they used so clear and sounded amazing I had high hopes for btsm and a few other opening acts and my expectations were far surpassed and was wanting at least another hour from btsm,Kai watching, flux and Eddie. So I'm really hoping btsm puts on something like this near Vancouver. Btsm has inspired me again now that it's back to Canada its time to use that and hopefully one day they will ask me to make a couple tracks with them

    Great show, not very accessible

by MLB on 3/5/24WAMU Theater - Seattle

The show itself was great! The lack of available seating made it very hard to enjoy the show.. as someone who struggles with chronic pain, this venue was not set up for those that cannot stand for long periods. I was forced to leave early one of the nights because my pain became unbearable after standing for several hours and there were no available seating to actually see the show
