About

About The Barbasol Championship

This July, some of the top rising talent of the PGA Tour will head to the greater Lexington, Kentucky, area for the Barbasol Championship. The Barbasol Championship is run concurrently with the Open Championship and is one of five tournaments classified as an alternate event on the PGA Tour, along with those running opposite World Golf Championships events.

This allows golfers who aren't playing in the Open to still get some tournament time, and it allows younger golfers to make a name for themselves. The winner of the Barbasol Championship earns 24 points in the World Golf Championships rankings and 300 points toward the FedEx Cup standings, as well as a prize of $630,000 from a $3.5 million purse. The winner also receives an automatic invitation to the next PGA Championship.

The Barbasol Championship is held at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, just south of Lexington. Parking is available at Keeneland in Lexington, where a shuttle takes fans to Keene Trace's Champions Trace course. The 7,328-yard Champions Trace is one of two courses at Keene Trace; like its sister course, Keene Run, it has a par of 72. In 2018, Troy Merritt scored a tournament record -23 in order to edge out Billy Horschel, Tom Lovelady, and Richy Werenski by one stroke and win the Barbasol Championship.

Founded in 2015, the Barbasol Championship held its first three tournaments at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Grand National course in Opelika, Alabama, before relocating to Kentucky for the 2018 event. It is the first regularly held PGA tournament in Kentucky since the Kentucky Derby Open operated outside of Louisville from 1957 to 1959, although the PGA Championship has been held at Louisville's Valhalla course in 1996, 2000, and 2014.

I went to this event not expecting much. There were no big names in the field but I thought it was crazy to not go watch pro golfers this close to my home. I was right! The course was awesome and the golf was super fun to watch. Lexington did a great job putting on this event!
