Anita Baker on Tour

Anita Baker has brought grace and class to every performance since her teenage days honing her three-octave vocal range at Detroit nightclubs. After gaining more experience on the stage with the Detroit funk band Chapter 8, she set off on a solo career in the early 1980s.

She hit it big with such romantic classics as "Sweet Love" and took the world by storm, starting with her first headlining stint, The Rapture Tour, in 1986. Over the next decade, Baker kept conquering the charts as well as stages around the world, until 1994-95's Rhythm of Love tour.

After a long hiatus, she came back strong in 2004 after signing to Blue Note Records, and she became a regular on the road once again. In January 2018, she announced her retirement, but not before saying goodbye with a bang with her hugely successful Farewell Concert Series tour.

Anita Baker Background

One of the great masters of quiet-storm slow jams, Anita Baker has long been a dependable voice for soft sophistication and everlasting romance. Born in 1958 in Toledo, Ohio, but raised in Detroit, Baker found her passion at a young age, performing in gospel choirs, then singing at local clubs and performing in various bands, including funk band Chapter 8.

It took some time — and persuasion from Beverly Glen Records label head Otis Smith — before she pursued a solo career. She recorded her debut album, The Songstress, in 1983. Three years later, she hit her stride with her sophomore album, Rapture. The release garnered a number of hits, including Grammy-winning songs "Caught Up in the Rapture" and "Sweet Love."

The following year, she earned one more Grammy, this time on track "Ain't Got No Need to Worry," a collaboration with brother quartet The Winans. The hits kept coming with Baker's 1988 album, Giving You the Best That I Got, which landed on the top of the Billboard charts and earned her more Grammys for Best Female R&B Vocal and Best R&B Song.

Baker would continue to dominate R&B into the next decade, starting with 1990's Compositions, followed by Rhythm of Love in 1994. From that point on, Baker took a break to focus on family, and it wasn't until a decade later that she returned with her next album, 2004's My Everything and then a holiday release, Christmas Fantasy.

The next decade saw another Grammy nomination, this time for Best Traditional R&B Performance with 2012's Tyrese cover "Lately." In 2018, she was honored with the BET Lifetime Achievement Award. That same year, Baker announced her retirement — but not before selling out shows around the country for her farewell tour.

A bit of melodrama, but what a vocalist...

by NAA on 12/29/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

First and foremost, I will see Anita Baker any time she comes to town. Vocally, she is absolutely a phenomenon and incredible. That said, I felt like she was a little dramatic and demanding frequently and throughout the evening with her staff, like sound crew, etc. It seemed like she thought things were off when all sounded fine and it took me out of the experience somewhat. Also, she sang a bunch of songs singing the harmony rather than the original melody which made it harder to recognize and connect with them. I mean, it's her show and she can experience her songs in whatever way she likes, but it left me feeling kind of disconnected from so many of these songs that I love. She is a wonder, though!

    Cranky and Late Auntie Anita

by Peter V. on 12/27/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Our experience is similar to people in other cities. I want to say at the out set that Anita's voice still sounds terrific, and this could have been a very different show. But the problems are several: 1). she's late, for us we were lucky it was just 40 min. In other cities it's been 2 hours or more with no opening act b/c she dumped Babyface after a Twitter spat. No excuse for this tardiness. 2) She spends an inordinate amount of time complaining to the sound tech about how to mix the sound coming out of the speakers facing her and limping all over the stage for no reason. That's what rehearsals are for, and this was the last leg of the tour. If they don't have the sound right yet, then it's hopeless. 3.) The sound was muddy and too loud, with distortion, for the audience. Anita does not pull the mic away from her face when she's going for the big notes, so it blasts everyone's eardrums because it was too loud already. It made you wince b/c it was so loud. Not sure if she is insisting to crank it up like that, but I've never been to such a loud show at that venue, including rock bands and this was supposed to be R&B/jazz/quiet storm music. Also, the arrangements were not great, and some songs were unrecognizable. 4.) Because she was late and wanted to do her entire set anyway, she went OT/rogue and then started telling the management she would pay for it. She promised three songs for the encore and then did 4. By 11:15 pm people just started walking out and left her signing up there to just a few people. That's how over it everyone was. This was an 8 pm show, she's late, and still singing at 11:20 because they were recording it apparently. This was a real shame because about 4 years ago at the Greek she was fantastic and the show was wonderful. This one was a hot mess, and it's a real shame because she can still sing, but her cranky personality, lousy song arrangements, tech issues, and too-loud sound, made it a total chore to enjoy. She called this her Farewell Tour, but no one will miss her after this. Such a shame.

    Great Show Bad Venue

by Mel on 12/27/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita sounded as great as ever. Gave our money's with and more by going into overtime but the sound engineers could not get her sound right and they did not open the Yaamava club even though its part of the reason I paid for premium seats. The staff gave our misinformation about the seating. The bars did not have champagne nor sparkling wine. Parking is $40 and the exits signs were mislabeled. Crypto.com arena sucks as a music venue. 0 stars for Crypto.com arena 5 stars for Anita the beautiful songstress.

    Never again

by Bob on 12/27/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

The view was great, the venue awesome, the performer - horrible. You cannot set the mood and atmosphere, and then proceed to ruin it by talking and complaining. Was there no soundcheck or rehearsal to check levels. I will be writing another form to get a refund or something. What a horrible event.

Anita Baker Concert Los Angeles, California

by Netpo on 12/27/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

This is the second time myself and spouse have seen Ms. Baker. She always perform her very best. I like that she is intimate with her audience and down to earth. She put on a lovely show for her audience and I will definitely see her again should she perform in Los Angeles. Ms. Baker is highly recommended by myself and spouse for others to see. Great show Anita! Keep up the good work! She is still the SONGSTESS!!!

    Too much talking

by Whitestearn on 12/27/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita's voice is amazing. She probably did not do sound check because she complained about the sound too much. I liked the fact that she came out in the audience to a back stage so we could see her without looking on the screen . I wondered if she was in pain because of the limping. The three hours she sang showed the strength of her voice. All together it was an enjoyable night.

by tesa on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

the obstacle that i encountered onset was my battery was running low and the tickets unfornately were on the phone so that was an issue but thank God for young mines because the young, african american ticket taker provided her excellent assistance in retrieving the tickets which were multiple transactions and she was able to retrieve prior to phone dying...The performance was OUTSTANDING and went into overtime with MS Baker stating she was going to give us a performance and that she did-OUTSTANDING AND ENJOYED MY CHRISTMAS PRESENT FROM MY CHILDREN OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTIST!!!

    One and Done - Annoyed

by Mary H on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

Anita Baker is my boyfriends favorite singer so I bought him tickets for the show at Crypto almost a year ago. Getting in and out of arena was a breeze. We had great seats but the rows themselves are made for midgets! I have short legs and I could barely sit facing forward without my knees touching the back of the seats in front of us. Every time someone in our row had to get up (which is incredibly annoying) we all had to exit the row - again ANNOYING. The show started late which was annoying. Anita had a LOT of issues with the sound guy and spent a LOT of time directing them how to correct the sound which never seemed to happen. I feel it was more what she was hearing not what the audience was experiencing; overall the sound was VERY LOUD. We did like it when she left the main stage and "came into the audience"which put her very close to us. Her voice is great but just too many loud runs (almost screaming) type of notes that we felt really took away from the music. I guess she wanted to prove that she still "has it"but it really wasn't necessary. There was a group of girls, much younger than us, sitting behind us and they all put napkins in their ears to dampen the sound! I'm happy we saw her but once is enough. One plus for Anita, since she started late she ran the concert on overtime so the fans were not short changed, In reading other reviews I see starting late is not uncommon for her - shame on you... nobody like to be kept waiting. Just sayin'''''

    Better than I imagined

by dani_t on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

There were tiktok videos showing Mrs. Baker's previous show in Houston and it didn't show her performance in a good light and she did reference this during her performance that everything that we see on the internet isn't always as it seems. She was right her performance was great, yes there was so sound audio issues but it was to expected and she admitted she is a perfectionist. Outside the audio issues occasinally the show was 45 mins late but she made up for the time by staying on stage longer than she was planned. Mrs. Baker sang songs that the audience asked for and said that she doesn't have a song list but it made it more enjoyable that why. I felt like she was very involved with her audience and made us feel like it was a personalized concert. This was my first time seeing Anita in concert and I would definetly go to another

    Anita Baker still has it!

by n/a on 12/26/23Crypto.com Arena - Los Angeles

I really enjoyed the concert. Everyone seemed to be enjoying it as well. I only wish she would have done her sound check before the concert. I fill like she did not because through out the concert she was asking the band to fix things.
