Yuja Wang on Tour

Wang made her European concert debut in 2003, performing Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto with David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle; shortly after, she enjoyed her North American debut in a concert in Ottawa under the baton of Pinchas Zukerman. Her New York Philharmonic debut came in 2006, while, the following year, she performed Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto with Charles Dutoit and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She has formed relationships with eminent conductors such as Michael Tilson Thomas of the San Francisco Symphony and Zubin Mehta of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Wang has consistently wowed audiences with her mastery of the standard repertory, but she's upended the stereotype of a self-serious concert pianist with awe-inspiring versatility, spicing up her performances with comic flourishes, jazzy flair and even funky barrelhouse chops.

Yuja Wang in Concert

Chinese pianist Yuja Wang has taken the classical world by storm with her rhapsodic, thoughtful interpretations of music by composers like Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Chopin and Prokofiev. A Romantic through and through, her touch always gives way to airy melodies and textures that convey oceans of feeling. Born in Beijing in 1987, Wang took up piano at a young age, going to the Central Conservatory of Music in her hometown, and then as a teenager, attending the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She won prizes at the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists, the first Sendai International Music Competition in Japan and the Aspen Music Festival's concerto competition before beginning a lauded career as a touring soloist in the early 2000s. Signing to esteemed label Deutsche Grammophon, Wang would release a string of critically beloved records that situated her as an enduring force in the industry. Her first album, Sonatas & Etudes (2009), featured music by Chopin, Ligeti and Scriabin, and scored Wang a Grammy nomination in the Best Instrumental Soloist Performance category; the following year, she released Transformation, which contained music by Stravinsky, Scarletti, Brahms and Ravel. She also recorded multiple Rachmaninoff albums, and has recorded with top conductors like Gustavo Dudamel and Claudio Abbado.

Wonderful evening from start to finish. LA Phil conducted by Dudamel was fantastic, Yuja Wang sensational. Picnics and drinks allowed into the venue, which gave it all a really friendly atmosphere.

This young woman is fantastic. It's impossible for me to understand or try to figure out her amazing, complex, unique, wonderful talent. I wish just one of my great-granddaughters could play the piano even close to the wonderful talent this young, beautiful woman does.

Yuja Wang Illuminates Ravel and Gershwin

by leighclark on 7/24/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Yuja Wang is the world's greatest classical pianist. Many are good, some are great, but none achieve her consistent level of artistic brilliance and innovative virtuosity. Not even Vladimir Horowitz, who was amazing, was as good as Yuja. She is the greatest classical concert pianist since Franz Liszt (probably better than Liszt, although he left no recordings, so it's hard to determine this with any precision). She's phenomenal on YouTube and CDs and unbelievable in person. She has more charisma than a world-class symphony orchestra and her love of her instrument and her art shine brightly with every note. She is one of Gustavo Dudamel's favorite pianists (his absolute favorite, I would guess) and they worked flawlessly together, discovering nuances and surprises in Ravel, and especially in "Rhapsody in Blue," that those of who have heard the pieces many times did not imagine were even there. It was revelatory music-making: bold, transcendent, and transformative.

    Yuja Wang was awesome

    by Ssoto3 on 7/24/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The whole show was so fun, the orchestra opened with some great pieces, some of which sounded like cartoon western! It was great, my two teenagers and I kept smiling at each other as we thought of some old cartoons that sounded like they had this music in them. But the highlight of the evening was when Yuja came out...not only was she gorgeous in her first dress (she looked like a pink mermaid), but she played with such joy and heart..one of the pieces actually brought me to tears. When she got going on the faster pieces, it was like smoke could have come from those fingers if she was a cartoon! And then she came out after intermission with a vavavoom green dress, the whole place went wild for that. She played Rhapsody in Blue so perfectly....it was a great event

I have seen Yuja Wang in concert 3 times at the Bowl, and I'm always in awe of her performances. She is stunning in her attire and her piano planning is mesmerizing. She and Dudamel seem to have an amazing communication, synchronizing smoothly in every movement.

    Yuja Wang

by thumpbox on 6/30/16Virginia Arts Festival - Norfolk

This brilliant young Chinese pianist is utterly amazing. My wife and I (both classically trained musicians - she a violinist and I a pianist) thoroughly this wonderful artist. She has the musicianship, temperament, and keyboard executive skill to capture the lyrical as well as the technically exciting passages of the varied repertoire of her program. She is definitely one of the finest pianists before the public today, and the Roper Center venue was a good place to experience and savor Wang's artistry. The rest of the audience was stirred to the same level of excitement that my wife and I had upon hearing and seeing her. There were quite a few open (untaken) seats - which was something of a shame in that so many pop performers (I purposely avoid the word "artist" in relation to them) garner so much of the general public's attention. This concert SHOULD have been most definitely to a sold out house.
