    Ballet at its best

by Brian on 4/6/22Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Three ballets in one performance showcased City Ballet's artistic talent and technical prowess. The brilliance of George Balanchine’s DANSE CONCERTANTES, the genius of Geoffrey Gonzalez’ RHAPSODY IN BLUE, and the precision of KINGDOM OF THE SHADES made for a most memorable night at the ballet.

Not quite up to big city ballet standards

by AMarcus on 4/2/22Balboa Theatre - San Diego

There where three small ballets performed. The first was a Balanchine choreographed ballet that just did feel like a Balanchine. The second was Rhapsody in Blue. This was a mix of ballet and modern dance and featured some male dancers that were pretty good, but the costumes just didn't work (one piece leotards would have bene better). The finally piece was the best performance and started to feel like a real ballet company. While we appreciated dancing is very hard, some of the dancers just couldn't hold the poses without shaking. I know I couldn't, but I'm not a professional dancer! About the venue. For the ballet, we sat in the orchestra seats, which were OK. We sat in the balcony for a talk before the ballet by a really knowable guy that is not a good public speaker (no passion), and the seats were ridiculous. I'm taller than average (5' 11") and not overly large (180), and I was scooted all the way back in the seat and my knees were pressed against the seat in front of me. Do NOT get balcony seats if you are over 5' 9" tall!

this is truly a world class ballet company. the dancers are all well trained and it all showed in this delightful and uplifting performance of such variety. from the start with the balanchine ballet, to the fabulous rhapsody in blue and then the classical la bayadare - the program and dancing were remarkable. thank you to the directors and all who work to make this company a treasure for san diego and ballet lovers everywhere.

    Stunning.

by James on 5/15/19Spreckels Theatre - San Diego

Took my mom for mother's day and we had a GREAT time. I had seen reviews about the seats being small but I'm 6' 250lbs and they were plenty big. We valet parked for $10 directly under the theater which was convenient. The staff was helpful, the theater was gorgeous, the show itself was fantastic.

    Mozart’s Requiem

    by J. M. on 5/14/19Spreckels Theatre - San Diego

Excellent production. Dancing very good. Choir excellent. The individual singers needed more volume. The soprano especially.

    Balanchine

    by R. E. on 3/13/19Spreckels Theatre - San Diego

Wonderful performance. WE where not able to see toes of the ballet because we where on the front row. Also the large Chello's blocked our view from the right side!

    Great performance

by Sasha on 3/13/19Spreckels Theatre - San Diego

It has been a while that I have sat down to enjoy the city ballet. Their energy and enthusiasm was excellent. Also, listening to live music is a treat, however the cello instrument obstructed part of view from my seat. I wonder if anyone had the same problem. It is an old landmark theater with details and most seats are close to the stage.
