I saw Jennifer Knapp in concert around 12 years ago (or whenever Kansas first came out), and the friends with me had seen her in 2003 right before she disappeared. We agreed that on both occasions she did not seem comfortable in her own skin. This time, able to be honest about her lesbian lifestyle, she related much more naturally to the audience. Jennifer Knapp is a phenomenally talented artist. Unfortunately the concert started late and ended early because of a fire in the building. I think she and the audience were just getting warmed up. Her lyrical prowess, husky vocals, exceptional guitar playing, and overall passion greatly touched me. Jennifer sang many songs from her new album but the songs from previous albums that convey the most brokenness: "Martyrs and Thieves," "A Little More," "The Way I Am," and "Undo Me." She tried to present herself as being at peace with her lesbian lifestyle, but her internal conflict over it was clear. However, her honesty was refreshing. What if the only difference between Jennifer Knapp and other Christians is honesty? My heart breaks for her in her struggle, and I am so grateful to her for sharing her music with us.
