John Mellencamp in Concert

John Mellencamp has been bringing his brand of American heartland rock to fans since the late '70s, when his raw, rootsy sound set him apart from the arena rockers in vogue at the time. The Midwestern twang that adds to his signature vocal style also informs his songs, as he details the ups and downs of the everyday working folks he grew up among. The rough-and-ready roots-rock sound he perfected on milestone '80s albums like ‘American Fool’ and ‘Scarecrow’ has remained a crucial touchstone for Mellencamp's concerts, regardless of where he falls in the roots–rock spectrum at any given phase. And when he delivers classics like "Jack & Diane," "Pink Houses," "Small Town," or "Hurts So Good," he digs deep for a gritty, from-the-gut delivery that connects with his audiences in an immediate, visceral way. From his 2017 Sad Clowns and Hillbillies tour with guests Emmylou Harris and Carlene Carter to his 2018 Other People's Stuff tour, Mellencamp's latter-day outings have shown that the veteran road dog only gets tougher and more determined.

John Mellencamp Background

John Mellencamp was born in Indiana in 1951, and worked with a series of bands throughout his teens, but in the mid '70s he managed to hook up with David Bowie manager Tony DeFries, which led to his first record deal, under the name Johnny Cougar. He scored his first hit, the rocking "I Need a Lover," in 1979, but it was his 1982 album ‘American Fool’ that really broke him through to the big time. The massive hits "Jack & Diane" and "Hurts So Good" made him a bona fide rock star. On subsequent '80s albums like ‘Uh-huh’ and ‘Scarecrow,’ Mellencamp (finally working under his own surname) developed the sharp, sociopolitical side of his lyrical sensibilities. On songs like "Pink Houses," "Small Town," and "Scarecrow," he sang of and for the working people who are the heart and soul of America, and Mellencamp became an American icon in the process. But despite his Grammy award, his mega-Platinum record sales, and his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame membership, Mellencamp has never lost sight of the people who put him where he is, and they're still the focus of his music.

    The concert was a reminder of the magic of the classic movies and the great screen performances of the 50's and 60's. It was a fresh look at the way Hollywood once was. A welcome look back in time. And as always John Mellencamp did not disappoint. Great concert.

    Enjoyed the show from the unique opening which tied in throughout to closing the show with one of my favorites. Saw Mellencamp in the eighties in Chattanooga, he brings the same energy!

    My husband and I attended John’s performance in Chattanooga, TN on Monday April 15th. It was a fantastic night and from the front row we watched, we sang, we listened, we remembered, we cried, and we danced. John was in top form and the audience appreciated every moment of the performance.

    Totally awesome. Show was great. John can still rock the house. If you aren’t a long time fan that has stayed current with John, you might not have enjoyed it as much. But I loved it. I hope he is willing and able to keep going. The venue was perfect.

    Love his hits! Ticket prices were nice. Didn’t care for the 30 min of old movie clips that started the concert off. Stupid. Never seen another performer do that. This was the 3rd show I saw of his, starting Feb ‘22. All EXACTLY the same. 30 min of boring b/w movie clips, of movies I’ll never watch. I was hoping this year would be a different concert. Nope. Also, what’s with the coveralls? He used to always dress nice for concerts. Disappointed. Probably won’t see him anymore. Even the shirts were the same, just different cities listed from last year. Had I known it was “the same tour”, I wouldn’t have gone. First time I saw him was in Bloomington in ‘84. From then on, every time I’d go to one of his concerts. It’d be a different tour, set, & look. Loved it up to ‘15. Now that he’s getting older, I guess, the last 3 shows I’ve seen of his have been the exact same thing. He doesn’t move around too much now. Other performers, his age & older, I’ve seen in the last 2 years, some more than once, it was always a new show with lots of energy. Great clothes, movement, changing up the set, & some huge venues. As for the venue, it was a nice smaller venue, like last years 2 shows I went to. Prices on drinks were ok. Prices on snacks, high for me, considering it was basically popcorn & candy. No hot food, which I prefer at events. The parking is free there so that was really nice! Sound was good. Chairs were basic. Location of venue is in downtown. So if you’re not familiar with the city, all the one way streets, & the way the streets are around the venue can be confusing. Ample large restrooms.
