Marvelous Evening
I have listened to and followed Catherine Russell for about 20 years and was thrilled to see her name pop up for a gig at Jimmy’s Club in Portsmouth. I immediately booked the best seats I could find. My wife loves her as well so I didn’t tell her who we were seeing until we got there. The venue is beautiful as are the acoustics. Her three piece band was perfection. The piano player was beyond incredible. He could have played all night solo and everyone would have loved the show. Her guitarist and music director was terrific as well and she allowed each musician to frequently display their chops which were substantial. As for Russell, she was sublime. Her timing and phrasing and her gift of swinging effortlessly through a song was astounding. Her personality equals her vocal talent and the attentive audience gave her plenty of love all night finishing with a standing ovation and a beautiful encore. Hats of to Jimmy’s for booking her and please, please bring her back!

TriC Jazzfest
Cain Park - Cleveland Heights
My friend and I both loved seeing the emerging artists, the wonderful sound system and the seats. Truly a wonderful Jazzfest. Dominic was amazing, I loved Lakecia Benjamin. My friend loved Samara Joy. Christian Sands was terrific for both of us. Neither one of us understood the music of Marquis Hill. We didn't feel what he was trying to say. The next day, we loved Bria, Emmet Cohen and truly enjoyed Harp vs Harp. We left after three songs by Catherine Russell. While we both loved her voice, personally I wasn't thrilled by her material selection. The three songs we did hear reminded me of music my grandfather listened to. If Grandpa were alive now, he'd be about 110. When I heard about food trucks, I was excited because I've experienced the food truck gathering downtown and that has a lot of lovely choices. While the food here was good (from the cafe), there wasn't a fruit or vegetable in sight. I missed that. I do hope that there is another Jazzfest at this venue as it was very relaxed and enjoyable.

Excellent Show
Berks Jazz Fest - Reading
If you are a fan of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holliday type music, this show is for you. John Pizzarelli does a good job handling the Sinatra songs. He's not quite Old Blue Eyes, but he is a very good singer and great guitarist. Catherine Russell is just a vocal phenom. Incredible range and power she truly understands the subtleties of Holliday's genre. She can give breathless quiet notes and then just power through when it calls for it. I do want to take the time to praise the ensemble accompanying the stars. Besides John's guitar, there was a grand piano, regular bass ans drums. They were all excellent on their instruments. They were definitely in synch with each other and it showed. The entire show had crisp, clean and clean sound. It was quite refreshing to hear instead of the over blown sound from the other shows (here's looking at you Brian Culthbertson). Lateky the sound mixing has been atrocious but this show was just spot on. Enjoy this show. This is a really great show for the genre.

Catherine & her band are world class musicians. The food was tasty and a good variety (i.e., omelet station, greens, salad & oxtails).

Catherine Russell RULES!!
Scullers Jazz Club - Cambridge
I have seen Catherine Russell a couple of times at Scullers Jazz Club. She has a wonderful style and sings a very eclectic mix of music. She can start with a raucous Fats Waller song and then take it down with a Sam Cooke ballad. Her band is a group of very talanted musicians. I have seen her as a back-up vocalist with Steely Dan and the Dukes of September. Catherine's CDs have a regular presence on my CD player. I never miss a chance to see her when she is in the Boston area.
