About

Newsies on Tour

A family-friendly hit since its Broadway debut in 2012, Disney's Newsies: The Broadway Musical returns to stages across America. Based on the big-screen Disney musical released in 1992, the stage adaptation brings fresh energy to a rousing story that takes as its starting point the real events known as the Newsboys' Strike of 1899. When New York publishing titan Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices and makes life harder for the youngsters who sell his papers, it's up to a charismatic newsboy named Jack Kelly and female news reporter Katherine Plumber to rally the newsies.

Offering nonstop thrills and an inspirational message, Newsies is an engaging and enthralling stage show that's continued to delight audiences since its original Broadway run of over 1,000 performances and its first national tour in 2014. Featuring a Tony Award-winning score, acrobatic choreography, and stirring songs ("Seize the Day," "Santa Fe," "Once and For All"), the show is a favorite for kids and adults alike.

About Newsies

The winner of Tony Awards for Best Choreography and Best Original Score in 2012, Disney's Newsies: The Broadway Musical has fast become a new classic of American musical theater. With a score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, the story follows the 1992 Disney original, one of the studio's most treasured movies in recent decades. Like the movie, the musical is based on real-life in turn-of-the-century New York City, when publishing giants relied on plucky youngsters called newsies to sell their papers citywide. When newspaper magnate Joseph Pulitzer raises prices and creates new challenges for the newsies, a boy named Jack Kelly must rally his friends from all over the city to set things right.

A popular new show of the 2012 Broadway season, Newsies was nominated for seven Tony Awards, winning two. Alan Menken's score and Christopher Gattelli's choreography were both honored with Drama Desk Awards. The original Broadway run lasted over 1,000 performances before Newsies found new audiences on the North American tour that began in October of 2014 and continued for 784 performances in 65 cities. Millions more saw Newsies thanks to the filmed production released by Disney in 2017 and viewable on Disney+. Made available by Disney Theatrical Licensing in 2019, the live show has become a beloved addition to repertoires for theater companies and venues nationwide.

    Good

by AJ on 7/21/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

The traveling troupe was great but the sound system at the Saroyan Theater was horrible and you couldn't understand a word that was said. This is not just my opinion. The people seated around me had the same complaint. I was very disappoint especially for the price I paid for the tickets. The Saroyan needs to do some upgrading on the sound system.

    Great Show, poor sound

by Danno125 on 7/19/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

From the first song I could tell there were sounds issues. Muffled mics and an overpowering orchestra led to a miserable first act. I guess there were enough complaints because the second act was much better. This is a hit on the venue, not the show. The show was great.

    Hot and bad sound.

by Sf on 7/16/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

It was one of the hottest days of the year and the theater only had 2 doors open for entry, leaving patrons standing in the 102 sun. Then the upper balcony was at least 15 degrees warmer than downstairs. The sound was also terrible upstairs, mics cutting out or not turned on when actors started taking/singing.

    A great production!

I took my 11 year old daughter as a gift because she adores Newsies. We had the best time! The performers were amazing and had fantastic energy. My daughter thanked me about 100 times because she enjoyed the show so much.

    Sound Problems Old News

by D. K. on 7/16/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

What a disappointment. The dancing was high energy, the voices were very good, and the sets were creative. But the sound system ruined the whole experience. The dialogue was impossible to understand and follow because the words were slurred and muffled. Everyone seated around us was complaining. I'd like to think the sound cleared up a little after the intermission, but the first half of the show was a lost cause. The previous Broadway Show was crystal clear and a joy to hear. I'm guessing the road show brought their own sound equipment. Saroyan needs to upgrade their system or they will lose customers.

    Great show, but...

by B. M. on 7/16/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

The show was fantastic! So much talent and energy! However, we were in balcony, and it was stifling hot up there. There were some major sound issues as well. Also, the ticket pricing was indicative of a national tour (in fact, more than I paid for the national tour of Lion King in the same venue) so I was surprised that a- there was no merch (my kid was bummed) and b- it's a small company out of southern California.

    Wow!

by deeanner on 7/16/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

I took my son to see the matinee showing and we both loved it so much that we wanted to stay and see it again. The performers were amazing and the dancing was beautiful. I would definitely see it again.

    Poor

by Spike on 7/16/19William Saroyan Theatre Fresno Convention & Entertainment Center - Fresno

Quite often when there was no sound but dialogue the words were inaudible (poorly mike'd up??). When the orchestra was playing in full the dialogue was completely drowned out. The two females were speaking in singing in a "Minnie Mouse" voice (why?). We left fully disappointed at the interval.
