About

SINKANE IN CONCERT:

From his days as a session player for bands like Of Montreal and Yeasayer to his current status as one of DFA Records' most eclectic artists, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Sinkane has stayed true to his multifarious roots. The British-born sensation was raised in London, Sudan, and Ohio, and his wildly diverse sound reflects these locales perfectly with elements of British psychedelia, African rhythms, and American funk guitar. Sinkane synthesizes these disparate styles to make funky polyrhythmic music that's both exotic and familiar enough to get fans dancing. Whether he's setting a mellow groove with "How We Be" or picking up the pace with "New Name", Sinkane is a visionary and genre-devouring performer who always impresses on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sinkane was born Ahmed Gallab in London and spent time living in Sudan before moving to the US with his parents at age five. The family eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio, and it was there that a teenage Gallab discovered the city's hardcore scene. After picking up several instruments he found work as a session player for sonically adventurous musicians like Caribous and Eleanor Friedberger, and before long he had relocated to Brooklyn to pursue music full-time. He made is solo debut as Sinkane in 2008 with the album Color Voice, and followed up with a self-titled album in 2009. His unique sound and creative shows attracted the attention of venerable NYC electronic imprint DFA Records, who signed Sinkane in 2012. He made his debut on the label later that year with Mars, a critically acclaimed collection of songs that showcased his vast musical knowledge and virtuosic chops. Following extensive touring Sinkane released his fourth album Mean Love, another extensively praised record that featured contributions from a veritable who's who of influential musicians including David Byrne, Damon Albarn, and Devonte Hynes of Blood Orange. Hailed by NPR in 2014 as an "artist you should know", Sinkane continues to enthrall with his vibrant multicultural sound and energetic performances on tour to match.

I can't believe there was hardly anyone at this show. The band had so much energy and every member had equal time to shine. So much talent packed onto a small stage. I feel really lucky to have caught this show as it wasn't advertised at all. If you get a chance to see this band, grab it!
