About Jody Watley in Concert
Jody Watley, singer/songwriter/producer/businesswoman, is one of the architects of 21st-century pop. From her groundbreaking marriage of rap & R&B (1987’s “Friends,” a collaboration with hip-hop legends Eric B. & Rakim) to her vision-forward marriage of high fashion, street fashion, and music in the ‘80s (long before it became the norm), to her fusion of jazz and underground club culture with keen pop instincts, and the ease with which she crossed and still crosses genre, Jody Watley forged the template that is now everybody’s playbook.
Winner of the Best New Artist Grammy in 1987, Watley’s entire career has been about looking forward, drawing inspiration from personal heroes and iconoclasts who were and are always ten steps ahead of the pack. The Chicago native’s eclectic repertoire - R&B, hip-hop, House, jazz, pop, drum & bass, ambient, spoken word - is built on a positive vision and a strong taste for artistic and aesthetic risk.
I am so happy to had seen the Ms. Jody Watley @ The Howard and it was a wonderful show. She exemplifies class, positive energy and authentic artistry. She makes me proud that she remains a trend setter in style, purpose and passion for life and music. Job well done and she had my bestie (a fellow Aquarian in awe and fanned out! Thank you Lady J!!!!
This was my first time attending the Howard Theater. Loved it! Great show! Jody Watley was fantastic! Not only a great live performer, but a genuinely lovely person. Already looking forward to my next visit.
Jody and the opening act was really great (grade A+). The sound system was really crisp and clear (A+). The general admission seating was perfect despite getting their early to get in line (grade A). I was concerned about the 6:30 doors opening for it always seems that these kind of things are never on time; doors open at 6:40 which wasn’t to bad (gradeB+). My pre paid parking was confusing (1st time at Howard) because I couldn’t find the street sign next to the theater for the sign was not very visible from my car (F). I didn’t realize parking was in front with valet service to the parking area (grade B+). The food service was a bit slow and my burger was cold by the time I got it (grade D). Jody Watley and Shalamar Reloaded turned the Howard Theatre out .The group and her capable band went through all of Shalamar hits, you felt like The original Shalamar was on stage. The two young men with Shalamar Reloaded really can dance and sang. The video presentation also showcased the fabulous style of Jodie Wately over the years. Then Jody gave us all her hits from the late 80's. She also sang songs from her new CD which I am sure to get. The multiculture crowd could not get enough and you could feel the joy. Jodie still looks good and her voice was on point. She is so down to earth and humble. A must see concert.
She did an outstanding job! Great show! Sky favorite part was she came out in the audience and performed! She hugged and danced wit members of the crowd!
Great show. Jody knocked it out the park singing all her hits with a few new tracks. She was very gracious and accommodating to all her fans during the performance. It was nothing but fun all the way around.
She had us standing, dancing, singing, and losing ourselves into the night. She generously paused for selfies with fans and reached out to fans in the back rows. Her voice was flawless and SRL was so mesmerizing with their moves. Ms. Watley’s positive vibes and messages make it that more special. It truly was a night to remember!
She still got it. We were all up and singing along. Still have the songs stuck in my head. What a fun show!
I have seen Jody and SRL many times but this was the best ever. Great venue, comprehensive set list covering many hits, deep cuts and group songs. The band was tighter than ever and Ms Watley owned the stage and crowd. A must see.
Jody Watley was fantastic! The venue was great! Food was tasty, need a little more variety. The wait staff was awesome, very attentive. Jay treated us well. Seating is a bit tight. I throughly enjoyed the show.
