About

Adapted by Erica Schmidt from Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand

Music by Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner of The National

Lyrics by Matt Berninger of The National and Carin Besser

Choreography by Jeff and Rick Kumperman

with Ritchie Coster, Josh A. Dawson, Peter Dinklage, Hallary Fisher, Christopher Gurr, Blake Jenner, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Nehal Joshi, Grace McLean, Erika Olson, Scott Stangland

A raw and transporting new version of the classic tale of unrequited love and ghostwritten letters, Cyrano tells the story of a proud man who, believing himself unlovable, agrees to woo the woman he loves for another. With a charged contemporary immediacy to the language, this adaptation by Erica Schmidt (All the Fine Boys) mines this enduring, human story for its deep vein of heartbroken yearning, with haunting and compelling music by members of the Grammy Award-winning band The National and the Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor Peter Dinklage in the title role. Cyrano is a production of The New Group's 2019/20 season. Learn more at TheNewGroup.org

    The best!

by LAH on 12/25/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I hope more people will be able to see this show because it’s incredible. The staging was superb and the cast was a joy to watch from beginning to end. And the music! Every song fit the scene perfectly. Definitely one of the top three productions I’ve seen this year.

    A haunting masterpiece

by Captkidd on 12/25/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I’ll admit, I got the tickets because of the cast. I’m a huge fan of Peter and Jasmine and thought, well, Cyrano should be fun. I was blown away, the set was minimal but effective, the music new and dire. There’s no recording and all I want is to hear it again. Peter is not normally a singer, but his deep voice resonated with the longing and pain of the show. I’ve never been one easily moved, but I watched each moment of performance go by and grew as despondent as though I was losing my own love to another. Choked back sobs and actively wiped tears away. It was the last night so I didn’t get to see the cast but I wish to thank them from the bottom of my heart.

    Cyrano

by MerMer on 12/24/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The theatre is small so there is no bad seat Peter Dinklage was beyond words in his performance absolutely loved the play. His co actors were very good but who can hold a candle with Peter Dinklage on stage

Play was good, seating was terrible

by TheatreGoer on 12/24/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The performance was good. The choice for the slo-mo was confusing and distracting for the the first act. It worked better in the second act. Peter Dinklage sounded like he had a bit of a cold, which was only really an issue during his duet. The worst part of the play was the theatre. The seats were very small, barly any cushion, and flanked right next to each other, with nary a gap. The woman next to me spilled into my seat. I felt like a sardine.

    Songs for the Bard.

by Matt Lewis on 12/21/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

This adaptation exceeded all my expectations. I’m not a Musical Theatre lover. That being said this performance wasn’t drowned out by music or choreography. Peter Dinklage brought the courage and breath of Cyrano. The songs complimented the play and never took you away from the story. The cast was true and Seamless. altogether an awesome experience for the audience. Kudos to the director. The best play I’ve seen all year. A surprisingly treat.

    Wonderful Time in New York

by p. on 12/17/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

The play is off Broadway at the Daryl Roth theater. It is a small intimate space and there are no bad seats in the house. I attended with my husband, son and his girlfriend and all of us thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The singing was excellent and the choreography of the movements of the actors was visually captivating. The set design was both simplistic yet complex due to the choreography taking place within the space. My only concern is with the theater and its "lounge". There was only one bartender on duty (he also performed in the play); therefore it was impossible to get a beverage during intermission. However, that did not diminish the overall experience.

    Completely in awe!

by Jillie on 12/17/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

I left this performance completely floored and in awe. This spectacular cast pulls you into the story of Cyrano, told in part with moving music by members of The National. I loved the stop-slow-action movements that grounded the impactful emotions of the scenes. Peter Dinklage and his cast mates brought everything they had to the stage with nothing to spare. The energy was palpable. Don’t hesitate to go see this show while it is still off Broadway. I hope it will go on to do a long run. Bravo!!

    Amazing!

by Chris on 12/11/19Daryl Roth Theatre - New York

This is the second time I’ve seen this show. It totally justifies multiple viewings. I laughed. I cried. I can’t wait for the cast album. Also, the theater makes their drinks really strong, so you get value for your money if you visit the bar.

I would expect this to move to Broadway. Beautiful choreography, music, and great performances from all. My friend is going again!
