    A Very Good Event

    by L. F. on 2/18/20Balboa Theatre - San Diego

I was very impressed with the Rock and Blues Ballet Event and look forward to other innovative creations for the dance community. The first 2 portions of the performance get 5 stars. The creative effort, choreography and music were excellent even though the first section was not live music. However, the dancing more than make up for it. I especially enjoyed the second portion. The third section with the Pink Floyd Tribute Band was good but because of the choice of songs and the band being on stage with the dancers made we wonder who was accompanying who? This was the only section of the performance that I felt the dance choreography was being pigeonholed into the music too much. But, my overall rating is still 4.5 stars. I look forward to attending more performances.

ROCK AND BLUES AT THE BALLET

by 3KITMOM on 2/18/20Balboa Theatre - San Diego

Wow! I was thrilled to learn CalBal has a new Director. I've seen several of his productions now, and they are all superlative, on a level with ABT. Thank you! The recent production of The Rock and Blues Project was terrif! Just so much fun! Husband (who's not very ballet knowledgeable) and I greatly enjoyed the fab/fan/fun show! Thank you! Can't wait for Dracula ... Oooooooooo!

    The Nutcracker

by Watcher on 12/28/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Have been going for years, then this one knocked my socks off! All new scenery, costumes and choreography. The Act with the snow princess was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Just extraordinary!

    An extraordinarily delightful event

by manfred-k on 12/27/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

The Nutcracker performance by the California Ballet was the best ballet performance I have ever seen. Everyone performed absolutely great, from the solo dances all the way to group of sweet little children. The variation of the story, the artistic design, and the choreography were very well done. Thank you, California Ballet for this wonderful Christmas present.

    New Production gets highest marks

by L. F. on 12/26/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

I have seen the Nutcracker over 20 times in several cities but San Diego is home and the new production is overall great improvement on an already excellent production. The new dancers especially the principals were all younger and more energetic. The younger dancers also contributed to the delight in youth studying ballet. Even though I missed some of the old characters the new ones did a great job. The sets and costumes were all very much improved and contributed a lot to the new production. I have only one suggestion for the new Director: The Toymaker has always come on stage during the Finale of the wonderful full orchestra and during the final crescendo cymbal crashes twirled around in time to the notes and threw shiny "dust/glitter" into the air signifying that His Imagination created all the fantasy the audience experienced during the second half of the first act and the entire 2nd act. It is a small but significant part... please reinstate it next year! Also, he does not need the eyepatch it gives a sinister impression which the children do not need. The San Francisco Production does it and it did not endear the performance to me. Overall 5 stars for the new production!

    Children’s recital

by okay on 12/26/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

Unfortunate this ballet felt like a children’s recital more than anything. featuring dancing with 2 year olds, barely showing professional dancing in the first 2 acts, and generally disappointing costuming, I do not recommend this version of the nutcracker

    Nutcracker Parking at Civic Theatre

by Scott on 12/26/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

A very enjoyable show in a beautiful venue was marred by an absolutely parking experience. The garage attached to the venue is wholly unfit to handle the simultaneous discharge of all the parked cars. I’m sure it works fine when people come and go sporadically throughout the day but when hundreds try to exit simultaneously, the result is AN HOUR PLUS wait. We won’t be back to this venue.

    Amazing revamped production

by mjs_78 on 12/25/19San Diego Civic Theatre - San Diego

It takes a lot of talent to take a classic and bring new life to it while still honoring the traditional elements that make the Nutcracker. Jared Nelson has done just that. I was a tad hesitant to attend since I’ve been disappointed by other ballet companies in the past when they’ve performed new choreography. I’ve waited for the classical lifts and beautiful moments in the Pas de Deux, only to be left with some major disappointment when the choreography is different and sorely lacking the grandiosity. However, Jared Nelson has successfully merged everything that one expects from a classical Nutcracker production with all new elements that give it a breath of fresh air. It’s beautifully new and nostalgic all at once. To top it off, the California Ballet has more diversity than I’ve seen in many ballet companies, which I really appreciate. It all made for a wonderfully entertaining evening, and one that we will look forward to once again attending next Christmas!
