Canadian rock outfit Hot Hot Heat took the music world by storm with their 2002 debut full-length, Make Up the Breakdown (thanks in large part to the catchy hits "Bandages" and "Talk to Me, Dance With Me"). Make Up the Breakdown was quickly followed by Scenes One Through Thirteen - a collection of the group's earlier, punkier material - and, in 2005, by their major label debut, Elevator. Two years and several tours later, the group has lost none of its infectious energy, releasing their aggressive, super-charged fourth album, Happiness Ltd.

Just before the release of Happiness Ltd., we caught up with Hot Hot Heat drummer and co-songwriter Paul Hawley to discuss the new album, the band's current tour and the strangeness of performing on late night television.

Ticketmaster: The new album, Happiness Ltd., comes out tomorrow. It's been two years since your last release, Elevator. Are you excited to finally have some new songs out there?

Paul Hawley: It feels like a huge release, especially since it's been kind of a long process. I think it's our best record ever. It's Luke (Paquin's) first record with us, and I'm excited for people to hear us do our new thing.

TM: How would you describe the sound on the record compared with your past work?

PH: I'd say we went a little deeper this time. It's not quite so caffeine-jittery and poppy. We were trying to create a little more of a cinematic vibe. It still sounds like Hot Hot Heat, no doubt about it, but some of the ideas are a little more thoughtful and executed a little better. Definitely the record flows kind of like a movie.

TM: You used some new instruments on the album, like a theremin. What other new things did you use?

PH: Well, we have a policy - we'll try anything, but not use everything. We did a lot of stuff. For the first time, we used two live drummers in the studio, which gave us a really cool, huge drum sound for the record. We were using different kinds of pianos, tack pianos. We used this crazy old instrument called an octagon. It's like a keyboard that plays records.  It's really old and weird sounding, and always out of tune. And we used obviously all sorts of guitars and synthesizers...We did a lot of this record starting with the demos and then we worked backwards. When we took the songs into the studio, they were basically done, so we were spending more time with ideas for instruments, as opposed to trying to work songs out. We had time to goof a little. 

TM: You've been working on this album for almost two years. I believe you guys mastered one version of the album, but then wrote the song "Let Me In," which opened up a new door for the band and you decided to return to the album and redo much of it. Can you talk about that experience?

PH: We didn't redo any of the original songs we did in Vancouver. We just cut a few of them out when we did "Let Me In." We finished that record and probably took a little time off after that. We were just playing shows here and there. I went over to Steve (Bay's) house one day and he had this riff and an idea for a song. Immediately I saw the potential for it. We spent the next hour or two kind of hammering out the rough version of it. I think that night we did a demo for it. In addition to our jam spot, we have a little electronic drum set at Steve's, so we can do demo drums anytime day or night. We don't live too far away from each other in Vancouver. So immediately the demo worked really well. Then we played it as a song, and it worked really well. We were just like, "We've got to go finish this off." So we ended up in L.A. with Rob Cavallo finishing that song. By that time, we had "So So Cold" as well, so we banged them both out. That added more time, but what's more important: the record coming out a few months later or it being the best it can possibly be?

TM: Yeah, absolutely. No sense in rushing it. You mentioned earlier that the band's now playing with a new guitarist, Luke Paquin. What's it like working with Luke? Has he brought anything new to the band?

PH: He's great. He's super honest about his ideas and his opinions, which I appreciate. But he's also very tolerant about our eccentricities. I mean, we're all a bit weird. He's definitely got ideas of his own, and songs of his own. He knows how to be in a group, which is almost more important than musical talent, even though he's an amazing guitar player. I ended up playing a lot of guitar on the last record when Dante (DeCaro) left. Dante probably played 70% and I ended up playing 30% guitar on the last one. Even though I write songs, I didn't end up playing a lot of guitar on this one, which was nice. I could just let Luke do his thing. He's very talented.

TM: Can you walk me through the band's typical songwriting process? How do you get the ball rolling with a new song?

PH: Well, normally a song will come from me or Steve, and recently Luke. He had some contributions on this record. By the time we started writing this new record, we had been on the road together for a couple of years almost. So we were a band. It wasn't like he joined and then we started writing. We got to know each other well - maybe a little too well - and then we got a chance to write. Usually one of the three of us will come with a riff, a melody, a part of a song, and maybe a verse and a chorus. And it's usually between 30% and 50% done. Then we take that shell to the band and it's kind of like a skeleton. Then we flesh it out big time as a band. That's where it turns from a song on a piano or a folk song on a guitar into a Hot Hot Heat song..."Let Me In" was just a riff, then Steve and I fleshed out the song. "Out of Heart" was almost done as a demo when Steve brought it in to us. We wanted to replicate the magic that was on the demo, so we stuck really closely to it. But for the most part, one person brings in a little bit of something, and then we all, hopefully, turn it in to something magical.

TM: Let's change topics a little bit and talk about your live shows. I know earlier in the summer you opened a tour for Snow Patrol. How did that go?

PH: It was cool. I think we got to play to a lot of people that might not have heard of us or been into us. Before that, we were on tour with the Killers, which was kind of an ego-stroking tour, because we share a lot of fans. But with the Snow Patrol one, we were more trying to win people over, and I think maybe a few of them liked us.

TM: I'm sure they did. What's the audience reaction been like to the new material?

PH: Cheering, clapping, that sort of thing. (laughs)

TM: Do any of the new songs translate particularly well to the live stage?

PH: Yeah. "My Best Fiend" goes over really well, because it's a barnburner. "Harmonicas & Tambourines" is fun live. "Let Me In" is a good one too. We can definitely turn it up a notch with that one.

TM: At the moment, you're playing some dates in Europe, right?

PH: We just got back a few days ago. We went straight to New York to do Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Then we got to L.A. the day before yesterday. We were in New York for about two weeks, and we go back in November.

TM: I missed that Conan appearance. What's it like performing on live TV?

PH: It's weird. It really is. You never get used to it. It was like our tenth time doing TV. It was our third time doing , and we've done , and . You never really get used to it. It's not really your crowd. It's not really a rock venue. But you go out and you've got to search deeper, in a weirder place, to pull out the vibes. It's in the afternoon, it's only one song, and it's a bit clinical. But we still have to find it in ourselves somewhere to rock. ConanKimmelLenoLetterman

TM: Yeah, and you've only got one shot too.

PH: Yeah. Sometimes they say you can do two, but they definitely don't want you to.

TM: You've probably been too busy to see many other bands live, but have there been any recent concerts that have really floored you?

PH: Wow, let me think. I saw We Are Scientist at Reading, and they're always a ton of fun to see live. They're good buddies, so I'm always rooting for them when I see them. I saw Mute Math, and the drummer was just mind-blowing. I always like to see the Killers. I also saw Matt and Kim a while ago. It felt like my early days going to punk rock shows at houses and stuff. It had a sweaty, mosh-pit vibe. They're just so awesome and enthusiastic, and psyched to be rocking that I couldn't help but love them. The Vancouver-based Hot Hot Heat began life as an aggressive, synth-heavy band in 1999. After releasing a string of EPs—later collected on the album Scenes One Through Thirteen—the group released a full-length of original material, Make Up the Breakdown, in 2002. Featuring more melodic, pop-influenced songs, Make Up the Breakdown became one of the years most highly praised releases and marked the arrival of a major band on the indie scene. After extensive touring, the group returned with Elevator in 2005, featuring a catchy mix of pop and punk-rock spirit on such tracks as "Running Out of Time" and "You Owe Me an IOU."Similar Artists: The Futureheads, Spoon, The Walkmen, The Faint

    The 7th Street Entry offered Hot Hot Heat and Hey Rosetta a comfortable atmosphere. Their individual styles and energy were flaunted with ease. No doubt, this was a stellar show. I never heard of Hey Rosetta prior. They were fantastic. Hot Hot Heat, being my favorite band, was absolutely spectacular. Their performance kept all eyes and ears ready for each and every upcoming second. I feel so grateful that Minneapolis offers a venue that has such energy and history while offering an extremely personal experience.

    I’d taken the morning off in order to recover from previous night’s Big Boi show (presciently, as it turned out). By the time I arrived at the Bowery Ballroom at ten to eight I was well-rested in a calm, a low-expectations-sorta way – the only thing I knew of their music were a couple of gym-playlist-faves, and just the day before I'd described their sound as “insidious but oddly catchy". I did feel bad that an hour after doors the small venue was still only barely a quarter full, and I worried this might turn out to be a colossal waste of time, when the opener Hey, Rosetta! unleashed the first chords of their set with the room lights still on. They turned out to be more than decent musically, and remained likeable while getting everyone (including me) to come in closer and even mover their body. Their sound, which included a cello and violin, was high-energy-romantic in an Arcade Fire sorta way, and a handsome young Canadian told informed me of their name and that they were from Canada. And so I was once again in the first row by the time the second opener, 22s & 20s, playing unsmiling, Ramonesy rock, came onstage to play a solid but uneventful set. I should pause to explain that at the Bowery Ballroom they stack up instruments and equipment on the side of the room, obligating the musicians to participate in their set-up and break-down, and gently pushing fans out of the way to hand their instruments to roadies in front of the stage (an entertaining but surely not musician-friendly system). When the stage was cleared for Hot Hot Heat I noticed an igmar-esk teenager in a Metallica t-shirt who turned out to be the (at least adult) bassist for the headliner and guitarist for Fakesharkrealzombie, and I was slowly getting excited when flashing strobe lights and disco beats announced the headliner. I'd forgotten what they sounded like exactly, and was happy to discover it was a driving Bravery-Franz-Ferdinand-esk dancy rock sound. The set lasted for a little over an hour, and had simple, driving beats, eccentric synth work, and the Tom-Baker-meets-Marc-Bolan-lookalike singer’s shrill but oddly compelling yodel throughout. I admit I didn’t particularly care for the singer’s rock-god antics (especially his attempts to make out with the teen girls in the front during the show), but their energy and super fun music won me over pretty much from the first chord, and the barely-full show turned out to be surprisingly lovely experience. I hopped and danced the entire time, avoiding eye contact with the singer, but staring curiously at the bassist, and all in all I had quite a lovely time.

    All the bands were fantastic. Loved Every minuet! however I had a hard time hearing the vocalists at times, and I wish that the venue had more Space to view the bands.

    Hot Hot Heat thrilled; Hey Rosetta delighted

    The opening act, Hey Rosetta provided excellent tone and ample building excitement, showcasing some serious talent. Hot Hot Heat was superb, playing old favorites, and new hits with equally titillating energy and crowd interaction. The songs sounded better than ever, and the band was there for the fans completely.

    Hot Hot Heat is amazing!!!

    The show was awesome and held in an intimate setting at the Middle East. The opening band, Hey Rosetta, was awesome!!! I had no idea who they were before hand but loved them and bought the cd. The second band was alright. Hot Hot Heat was unbelievable!!! Their sound is just like it sounds on the cd and they are even better in person. I will go see them anytime they are around and they always put on a great show. HHH music = blissfully happy!!!!

    Hot Hot Heat, 22-20s, and Hey Rosetta!

    Hot Hot Heat, 22-20s, and Hey Rosetta! are all touring together, and honestly, Hey Rosetta! beat out HHT and 22-20's. They were the opening act and they're incredibly soulful and sincere. They thanked us for cheering after every song and they were extremely sweet people. Hot Hot Heat were awesome to watch, and they're great performers! 22-20's were alright, but nobody could understand a word they were singing (the music was louder than the lyrics). Overall, great show!
