Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

    Big Bolts Comeback

by Tim “Dr. Hook” McCracken on 3/17/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

First NHL game and it was awesome. We sat on the top row of the upper level and the view was surprisingly excellent. Tampa Bay came back from a two goal deficit to the dismay of all the Ranger fans.

    Experience Second to None

by Lyle on 3/13/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

My wife, Terri, and I attended the Lightning game versus the Flyers on Saturday evening and had an exceptional time. We are Ohio snowbirds who, over the past five years since I retired, have joined the legions of Bolts fans who live outside the greater Tampa Bay area. The fan experience at Amalie Arena is second to none. From the pre-game skate, to honoring a local veteran, the National Anthem, and on our trip a "Kiss Cam"proposal (very cool), everything is done with the Lightning fans in mind. We attended two games this winter, and lost a third due to extreme weather that prevented us from traveling from Redington Shores to Tampa at the last minute. We plan on more next winter. WE ARE BUCKEYE THUNDER!!

    Great experience at Tampa

by Mki on 3/12/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We went to see an NHL game where Tampa Bay Lightning and Philadelphia Flyers meet. The match was our first ever and the experience was really great. Victor Hedman was on fire in this game, recording two goals and one assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0. Tampa's success on the ice had the fans screaming and cheering their team on enthusiastically. The highlights of the match were exciting and the players gave their all. The Tampa Bay Lightning dominated the game and showed strength. The atmosphere was electric, and there were enthusiastic spectators.

    Good Game

by Wulfman on 3/12/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

It's unusual for me to go to a field hockey game in shorts. Clear winner with the Tampa Bay Lightnings, which was great. Unfortunately, the atmosphere is not comparable to that in Switzerland. Many spectators left the game 10 minutes before the end, which I can't understand at all. There is a lack of appreciation for the players. The stadium is very nice and everything is well organized. I would love to come again.

    Great time

by Jc on 3/12/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Everything was great. We loved the venue from the outside courtyard to the inside of the arena. All of the fans were very nice even though we were cheering for the opposition!!

Hockey games live are so much fun, from the goals to the fights. These guys are amazing athletes and the action is fast. Love it!

    Way too expensive

by MD on 3/5/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Only bought because we had company in town and they wanted to go to a game. I would NEVER pay that much for a ticket again. Club level really doesn't have that many amenities you can't get anywhere else in Arena.

    Fun times with family

by Erin P on 3/5/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We had a really good time -especially since they won in the shoot out. We liked that people from the community were included and honored during the event (100 year old man's birthday and he sang the national anthem with the regular singer - wow! Young boy that was team captain for the day. Woman from deaf and hard of hearing services, etc). It was a little expensive (we were 3 rows from the ceiling - $70 seats, food/beverage was quite expensive) and the folks behind us were really drunk/high and a little annoying. If you don't like loud noise/lots of visual stimulation, this is not the place to go. But if you like an energy-filled, exciting event, would definitely recommend.
