Pittsburgh Penguins History

The Pittsburgh Penguins joined the National Hockey League for the 1967-1968 season during the League's expansion from six to 12 teams. The Penguins played at Civic Arena (nicknamed "the Igloo") until the 2009-2010 season, when they moved to PPG Paints Arena (formerly CONSOL Energy Center).

Postseason appearances have been nearly a birthright for the Penguins and their fans since the 1990-1991 season, after which they won five Stanley Cup Championships. They've won six conference championships and earned the Stanley Cup Champion title in back-to-back seasons (2016 and 2017) with coach Mike Sullivan and the great Sidney Crosby as captain at the helm.

In the 2005 NHL Draft the Penguins selected Crosby as their No. 1 pick. Dubbed “The Next One,” Crosby has spent an historic 18 seasons with the Penguins and enters the 2023-2024 at 25th on the league’s all-time scoring list.

The franchise boasts more than a dozen former players in the NHL Hall of Fame, including Mario Lemieux, Ron Francis, Mark Recchi, Bryan Trottier, and Paul Coffey. The Penguins most recently made the playoffs in 2022. To date, they've appeared in the playoffs 37 times in their 55 seasons.

    I was hoarse from cheering!

by Deb56ster on 3/21/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

The Penguins are my team, and I'm so completely starstruck each time I attend one of their games... win OR lose!! To have the opportunity to watch some of the greatest players like Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin... well, it's just momentous for me. What I didn't care for was the people who go down to the glass during warm-ups prior to the start of the game. It prevented me from being able to see my favorite players. Those people didn't have seats that close, so in my opinion, they shouldn't have been allowed there. I paid a lot of money for MY seats which were 7th row from the ice... SO THAT I COULD SEE THE PLAYERS UP CLOSE. And oh, I don't care for the new scoreboard (Jumbotron). It's just too busy, full of too much information and blocks the view from many seats. It kept me from seeing Jagr's banner.

    Amazing Experience

by Kreider's Mom on 3/19/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

The arena is very nice - the staff were amazing! My friend cannot climb stairs and our entire party was permitted to enter the arena at the VIP entrance so that he would not have to walk too far to get to the elevator. I was able to change seats for 2 in our party (we were 4) as a result of them experiencing vertigo. The staff could not have been nicer in accommodating them. The usher at our original section walked us to customer service and followed up to ensure that we were looked after. Another usher offered to take pictures of us without our having to ask - outstanding customer service which also included staff working at the concession stands. Great to see Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang playing - thankful that the Rangers won. Would return to this arena. Pittsburgh is a great city!!

    Beautiful Arena and Area

by John on 3/19/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

However, no NA beer. This seems like an extreme oversight. Every other NHL game I’ve been to carries NA beer.

    Easy peezy

As easy and efficient as it gets. Easy to buy, super easy to use.

    Fan experience awful

by PensFan on 3/18/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

From trying to enter the building , to the food selection , to bathrooms and treatment by staff the experience at a Pens game from a fans perspective needs significant improvement. Shooting hot dogs into the crowd doesn’t make up for all the flaws. Not worth the price.

    Fun but very expensive

by Denny B. on 3/17/24PPG Paints Arena - Pittsburgh

The Penguins always make games fun to be at in person! The PPG Paints Arena was alive; full of upbeat music throughout the game that makes you want to get out of your seat and dance at times! Downside of attending the game is how expensive it is for a night out. Every little thing is just extremely high priced. A 20 ounce bottle of water costs just under $6.00. Over $11.00 for a slice of pizza. Fun night out to support our Penguins but won’t be able to attend too often because of how much it costs, unfortunately.

Wonderful NHL experience. Super helpful arena staff, lots of room in the seats, reasonably priced concessions. Highly recommend seeing a game at PPG Paints Arena
