    Opera and Jazz Mix Well

    by R2 on 4/17/19Southern Theatre - Columbus

This production was excellent! The CJO was in excellent form, the four singers were fantastic, and the ballroom dancers really added to the visual enjoyment of the show. Add in Bobby Floyd and this was one not to be missed!

Opera Swings Jazz - MORE, please!

    by mjc1016 on 4/15/19Southern Theatre - Columbus

The collaboration among the the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Opera Columbus, and the Fred Astaire Dance Studios was just marvelous! CJO is always exciting and polished in every genre it plays. On this occasion, the incomparable music from Great American composers such as Gershwin, Porter, Berlin, and Kern was the perfect vehicle for the impressive and varied vocal talents of the OC soloists. It was equally a showcase for the dancers, performing different dance styles of that era with verve and technical accomplishment. This was a wonderful and thoughtfully imagined meshing of finely-honed talents. Hope there's a reprise of this concept in the future!!

The Flood Opera, Clintonville Flood of 1913

    by R on 2/13/19Southern Theatre - Columbus

Opera and orchestra was well performed by the actors and musicians. Writing of the script could have been improved by flow or poetry. Seemed like a spoken script had been used but not converted to an opera setting. The connection of the scenes was also a bit late - for the duration of a 2hour opera, did not see the connection between the scenes until it was revealed in the last 15 min of the production. The use of the 4 side-by-side settings in different time periods in a local Columbus suburb was intriguing and was my draw to the play from advertisements. Was also important to learn about this event in history and an interesting aspect to relate its impact to decades and years later. Rated a 3/5

    A really great experience!

by Barbara on 2/11/19Southern Theatre - Columbus

I'll be honest, I'm not much of an opera aficionado. This one was so meaningful, so accessible, and so relatable, since it is set in Columbus. It traced the history of how a major historical event can be felt in ripples across generations. Very well done, very enjoyable!

    Loved it!

by Kathy on 2/11/19Southern Theatre - Columbus

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this opera! We especially enjoyed the history lesson offered prior to the show. We would definitely see it again and have told many of our friends about it. Well done!

    Great experience

Fun and moving. Only reservation: A little too earnest toward the end of the journey for an emotionally exhausted audience.

    The good and the bad

by AnOperaFan on 10/3/18Southern Theatre - Columbus

The opening remarks by Ms. Kriha Dye were enthusiastic and self-centered. She applauded the supposed diversity of the directors and then listed them all as female. And she commented on females playing parts that had been written for male actors. And she went on and on. It was a bit sad to see that Opera Columbus has left behind the history of the art and has descended into the pop culture with little substance. However the performance itself was done well. The orchestra was both powerful and yet controlled and the synchronization was near perfect. Chio Chio San was breathtaking and her voice never waivered throughout the performance. A real sleeper was the Bonze who, although in the chorus, filled the hall with a rich booming voice. He really should have been on stage ant the curtain and rendered appropriate applause. Pinkerton was weak but perhaps that was to reflect his weak character. All in all a delightful evening.

I truly enjoyed the performances. It had been years since I had been to the opera but I now plan on attending more often. The venue added a good vibe to my overall experience.
