About

Radiohead in Concert

Radiohead introduced itself with a shot heard ‘round the world — a hiccup of distortion that thrust us into the fuzz-blasted chorus of 1993's "Creep." That self-loathing anthem became one of the defining singles of the alternative-rock revolution, but the Oxford, U.K., quintet were quick to distance themselves from the post-grunge histrionics of their hit single. On their 1995 sophomore release, ‘The Bends,' the band proved they could craft songs as elegant and majestic as the Britpop chart-toppers of the day, but with a more finely tuned ear for cinematic texture. That latent exploratory tendency would flourish on 1997's future-shocked ‘Ok Computer,' an epic meditation on pre-millennial tension and encroaching technocracy; the album transformed Radiohead into the most celebrated rock band in the world. But while that staggering achievement would count as an indisputable career peak for any other band, in Radiohead's case, they were just getting warmed up.

With the dizzying double shot of ‘Kid A' (2000) and ‘Amnesiac' (2001), the band entered a fascinating new phase. Taking cues from the fractured electronica of the Warp Records label and avant-garde icons like Can and Miles Davis, Radiohead refashioned themselves as studio scientists subjecting their songs to radical explorations in dissonant texture and hypnotic rhythms, often reducing frontman Thom Yorke's famously dramatic voice to a subliminal detail in the process. Even as they drifted back toward traditional rock sounds on subsequent releases like ‘Hail to the Thief' (2003) and ‘In Rainbows' (2007), they were shot through an experimental filter, and ultimately driven more by feel than form. And while their 2016 release, ‘A Moon Shaped Pool,' eased off the electronics to highlight guitarist Jonny Greenwood's growing prowess as an orchestral arranger (cultivated through his sideline career as an Oscar-nominated film composer), it retained the distinctly disorienting quality of the band's 21st-century output. But no matter how far out into left field they venture on record, Radiohead have remained a compelling, crowd-pleasing live act, making their most outré material sound like perfectly natural arena-rock fodder, and coaxing out their songs' burbling rhythmic undercurrents into club-worthy danceable grooves.

    Glass Shattering Show

    by J. O. on 6/22/23

Radiohead has and will always be a therapy session of sorts for every loyal fan. Witnessing Radiohead live, will swallow you whole and spit you out into a jigsaw puzzle. I have watched them evolve over the last thirty years into an ever changing microcosm. This band has only graced my ears and eyes live, a weak four times in my thirty year love affair with them. Soul crushing, mind bending, a breath of fresh air (when you cannot breath), a beast forcing you to look your true self in the mirror, painfully descriptive, surprisingly uplifting, and yet they still hold true in delivering the sounds and pulsing notes that we as fans, all desperately need. One show that I will never forget was at Liberty Island on August 17th 2001. I sat on the steps of the World Trade Center for the very last time waiting for the ferry to the show. I didn't realize how significant that simple wait on the Trade Center steps would be, for me and all my fellow New Yorkers. The towers would be attacked by terrorists less than one month later. Thom York and Radiohead played an encore for 2 hours for their fans. In fact he played music until the very last ferry left the island. I stayed till the end of his last encore set. I have seen them at The Beacon, MSG twice, but, Liberty Island takes my breath away for so many reasons. My hair on my arms and legs is standing up straight thinking about that show. Go see this band, don't waste anymore time. GO see every band you ever dreamed of seeing. Let the music in. -J

    Severely Disappointed

    by K. R. on 6/23/22

I would have been better off staying home and listening on my stereo. The concert took place at the ACC in Toronto. The sound was so saturated that you couldn't even really decipher what was playing. The band's attitude was abismal. I understand year's ago they lost a crew member in Toronto due to an accident, but there's no reason to take this out on your fans. What a waste of money.

    Mind blowing

Honestly…they know how to create an immersive, explosive experience both aurally and visually. It’s like a gorgeous, sad carnival for the mind. Just incredible.

An Awe-Inspiring Event Spanning Decades of Music

by Herrminator on 8/6/18TD Garden - Boston

What can I say about this show?! Radiohead aboslutely nailed it! The show was wonderfully put together with crazy lights and visuals, mixed with an awesome audio mix that sounded wonderful in an arena. The crowd was super respectful and quiet during the quiet moments in the music, but loud when the moment was right. I can't recommend enough!!

Great venue and performance. We flew in from out of state and only caught the last 30 minutes. The band sounded great and the visuals were A+. Good energy from the crowd too.
