JOAN ARMATRADING ON TOUR:

More than four decades after her debut, British singer-songwriter Joan Armatrading remains one of the country's most beloved and respected musical figures. Armatrading's honey-toned voice and raw, emotional lyrics earned her a string of hits in the '70s and '80s, and she's only improved over the years, delivering ever more moving and passionate performances on each successive tour. She's a veritable legend on the guitar, and whether she's picking out tunes on a six-string or a twelve-string, she never fails to impress with her nimble fingers and soulful playing. On the road in 2015 for the tour A Very Special Solo Evening with Joan Armatrading, the beloved singer offers fans a rare treat -- intimate, career-spanning solo performances featuring stripped-down renditions of classics like "Love and Affection" and "The Weakness in Me".

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Caribbean-born Joan Armatrading spent her early childhood on Saint Kitts and Antigua before moving to Birmingham, England with her family at age seven. She picked up the guitar and piano in her early teens, and at age 16 she made her performance debut at Birmingham University with a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence". She released her first album Whatever’s for Us in 1972 and the follow-up Back to the Night in 1975, but she truly made a mark in 1976 when she cracked the Top 20 on the UK Albums Charts with her self-titled third album. The record's lead single "Love and Affection" was a Top 10 hit in the UK and also earned her a growing fanbase in the US, where she performed the song on Saturday Night Live in 1977. She cemented her status as the first black British female musician to achieve international success with her 1980 album Me Myself I, a new wave-influenced album that introduced a harder, rock edge to her sound and marked the pinnacle of her chart success. Armatrading has remained prolific ever since, releasing popular albums throughout the '90s and '00s. Following the 2012 release of her album Starlight, Armatrading hinted at retirement, meaning that the performances on her 2015 solo tour may be among her last.

    Extremely Special & Unforgettable Evening

by ralphshaha on 10/26/15Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I was very happy to be able to see Joan Armatrading on her first solo world tour. The song choice was perfect for my memories of her best performances. She blended various electric guitars with acoustic ones as well as playing keyboard. Her voice displayed all the qualities of a seasoned performer. I loved every song she performed. Some of the performances were enhanced by pre-recorded sounds. It was mostly strings which added harmonies & a special feeling for me. I saw her with a full band @ the Greek Theatre in L.A. back in early 80's. At first I missed the full band, but then I really enjoyed the completeness of her great guitar playing & strong vocals. A truly magical evening!

    love her

by Olapa on 10/20/15Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

Joan Armatrading has an extraordinarily beautiful voice, deep, rich, sweet full range. Her musical abilities on all of her guitars & piano are amazing. Her lyrics are provoking, evocative, sad to funny & back again - her lyrics are wonderful because she puts words/sounds together not usually heard....

    Disappointed performance

by Nononame on 10/20/15Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San Diego

I travelled from SF to see Joan Armatrading. Dinner was highly disappointing as it almost seemed precooked before the show. Service was excellent. Joan Armatrading seemed to simply be going through the motions to get through the show letting us know it was over her 200th performance on the road which seemed that way. I think we had higher expectations for a show that could have had a bit more thought put into it

The event was great. Joan a woderful performer and the setting was quaint. The sound in the place was very bad and the sound was muffled. I would love to see the performance, but with better quality sound.

    Great performance, horrible sound.

by MayaaBeee on 10/1/15The Space At Westbury - Westbury

I love Joan Armatrading. Have seen her many times since the 80's. This solo performance could have been wonderful however the sound mix was unfortunately terrible. Her guitar was way too loud so all her beautiful vocal inflections could not be heard. Loved seeing Joan though.

What a wonderful evening. Joan still sounds amazing and is still such a guiding force for women and rock/jazz/blues. Her backdrop, a movie screen, provided the intimacy of a family slideshow, and for those unfamiliar with her - the perfect opportunity to bring the audience up to date with what can only be described as an extraordinary career. HIghpoints - The Weakness in Me, Willow, Drop the Pilot, Me Myself I, I'm Lucky
