New York City Football Club History

New York City FC first began play in 2015, after the 20th MLS franchise was awarded in 2013. NYCFC has a strong connection with the New York Red Bulls, with their rivalry known as the Hudson River Derby.

After finding their footing during their inaugural season, New York City FC reeled off three playoff appearances in a row, making the Eastern Conference semi-finals in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The New York City FC roster was quickly built around international stars such as David Villa and Frank Lampard, giving the team credibility and a solid reputation from the very beginning. Villa, who before joining New York City FC helped lead Spain to the 2010 FIFA World Cup title, had an immediate and lasting impact on the club. He led the team in scoring in each of his four seasons and won the 2016 Landon Donovan MLS MVP Award before leaving to play in Japan for Vissel Kobe after the 2018 MLS season.

In 2021, NYCFC claimed their first MLS Cup championship behind 2021 Golden Boots winner Valentín “Taty” Castellanos and the MVP goalkeeper Sean Johnson. A year later, New York won the annual Campeones Cup match.

Nyc v Portland @ Yankee Stadium

very entertaining day, result unfortunate for NYC, staff at the stadium were all excellent. I got great views of the game, plenty of options for food and drink, all good.

    USL Promotion/Relegation needed

by John M on 9/19/23NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - Bronx

I would love if the promotion/Relegation system gets implemented in USL soccer. Just like the English Premier League. A lot more at stake.

    Excellent evening

NYCFC v Toronto FC. Leagues Cup 27 July. Outstanding team performance from a clearly well coached and motivated side. Match played in Harrison NJ, at the home of NY Red Bulls, so the crowd probably lower than usual but a decent atmosphere all the same. First class stewarding.

    Poor

by Javi on 5/31/23Citi Field - Queens

As a football fan that has been in different countries watching games so far this one has been the worst.Taking a part the quality of the game; the atmosphere is completely fake; the stadium is too big for such event; tickets are too expensive; no real football fans; big number of fans intoxicate+ $18 for a beer.I left in the 2 half because I wasn't enjoy a told.

    First Pro Soccer Game

by Mickey on 4/25/23Citi Field - Queens

We loved it! Took the family and had a blast. Only sad part is the price of food, drink and parking at CitiField. We had a wonderful time.

    Great Experience

by Unge on 4/12/23NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - Bronx

NYC FC has a venue that is hard to beat; Yankee Stadium. Easy to get in and out of via Subway. Pitch is a bit tight on the baseball field, but seating and views were great. Hardcore fans with drums sit in stands behind goal set along outfield wall; great to hear from distance. Took our two 12 year old boys and really enjoyed match experience.

    Different experience for a European

by Pim on 3/15/23NYCFC at Yankee Stadium - Bronx

The baseball stadium didn't bother me as much as I would expect up front. But no big stars anymore in the teams and the level of play was not so good but our expectations were not really high in that area. Overall nice evening but my roommate fell asleep

    Fantastic electrifying experience

by Rodymore on 10/20/22Citi Field - Queens

Apart from the rain, the venue was magnificent, fans made the whole night a wonderful experience, better than having 80K people at the stadium.
