I LOVE the Ames Center for any Venue....... But Did Very Much Enjoy Ole & Lena :)
After reading a review from the 2015 Ole & Lena play I was a bit apprehensive - the man was very negative!! I & my cousin truly enjoyed the 2016 one. I couldn't stop laughing. The highlight was when a classmate of mine from Belle Plaine, MN came up front to tell of his gifts to his wife at Christmas time. I didn't think I would know anyone in the audience being I'm not from the Twin Cities. I recognized the sound speakers as my son designed the sound systems & installed it in 2008. I'll be back next year.
I took my 80 year old mother and she loved it. I thought the show was Good/Ok.
This show was adorable and hilarious! We had a great time! I love that he said God bless you all at the end! My only negative is if someone says No to being brought up front, respect that and move on to someone else. Some people have anxiety or are just shy and simple want to enjoy the show, not be pulled up front. I realize it's in good spirits but we were nervous the whole time that we would get called on.
Considering the name "Ole and Lena's FAMILY Christmas" - I would have thought there would have been more than an actor and actress. We got there about a minute after the doors closed; and the greeter was completely rude to us. I went and saw A Christmas Carol at the Rosemount High School and paid $9.00. They had numerous scenery changes and it was outstanding. I paid around $30.00 for these tickets, two actors, no scenery change and I was absolutely not impressed. I will definitely not be going back.
This show was great and a true Minnesotan would love, enjoy and understand it.
This play was the lamest production I have ever been to! Obviously I am not too hi-tone or I wouldnt have bought tickets to the play but it was way too long with far too many "oh yahs", the MN accent was way over done and became annoying after awhile and had such a weak story line! It could have been very funny with the idea of the "snooty cousin from Edina coming" and actually having some other characters in the play with other people actually coming over for Christmas! The audience participation part took up way too much time and got pretty boring after the first 4 people! I couldnt wait to leave the auditorium. Dont waste your time!
Disappointed it seemed like everything was improv. Half of the play was on the main floor and very hard to see from the balcony. I stood for a lot of the play and my husband took a nap. Several unfavorable comments where made from others around us at the coat check.
This show had so much potential but it was so poorly executed. It was like they told the 2 actors to go out and talk and walk around like Norwegians. There were no classic Ole and Lena jokes, there was no slap stick, nothing. It was really boring and was honestly the first live performance my husband and I walked out of.
Excess stereotyped dialog- e.g., "Ya sure." - soon became a distraction that overshadowed stereotype dress and euphemisms and not much actor chemistry. Both actors involving the audience started out clever, but the allocated time dominated the play's run time and became a time filler. And that dominance underscored the absence of an imaginative subject matter interpretation. To wit, about 1 month ago MN Public Radio Prairie Home Companion had a joke hour show. Non-ending humor delivered so well that I could almost hear the radio audience laughing over the auditorium audience's. I was amazed MPR could secure that many high quality jokes and deliver them without becoming boring; I just wanted more, and more an more..... Too bad Ole and Lena didn't 't do half as well as MPR.
