I love ballets this was stunning, the colors were beautiful! The music was perfect. I can't wait until it comes back next year.
When I heard the advertisement for this performance I couldn't imagine how this ballet would be performed. I'm a cultured woman; I've seen many ballet performances, but I had yet to experience a performance so beautiful, so literal, and so extraordinary. The music is robust. The spoken words are soul stirring and the dancers are spectacular. I could see this performance time after time and still walk away feeling energized. The performance was so spot on that I do believe I smelled sea air during the "SAND DANCE". Jonathan Green's Art moves on stage the way it does in my mind when I view it. I loved it!
Loved it! The music, the art work the choreagraphy
Seeing fabric scenes of Gullah artist, Jonathan Green, set to music and then brought alive by William Starrett, artistic director and choreographer of the Columbia Ballet Company and his troupe, provided a high energy, exposure into the Gullah people and their way of life, in a truly amzing and unforgettable performance. Not to be missed!
Anyone could have enjoyed this production. When one hears ballet, One thinks of classical music, but this was not. I only wish that more people had attended.
This was lovely!!!! I would love to see it again. My 13 yr old son ranted and raved about it!
As good as our seats were I could hardly stay in mine because I was so enthralled with the sets, the music and the incredible dancing. Perhaps only the vibrancy of Jonathan Green's paintings could be translated in this way -- William Starrett's work is equally genius and the set designs -- especially the adaptations of Green's paintings -- were brilliant. We first saw this visionary ballet when it debuted in 2005 and were so happy for the chance to see it again. Some scenes were different, some music was different...I was a bit anxious about that and, for example, would have sworn that 2005's Sand Walk and Sand Dance couldn't have been improved upon; I would have been wrong. Can you imagine the whirling sea lapping the legs of the dancers? It does! And in all the beautiful colors of the the artist's childhood South Carolina sea islands. The musical selections were perfect. I especially liked those performed by the Hallelujah Singers and all the numbers in The Silver Slipper Dance Hall. And the costumes! The unique color and patterns of these are the essence of Jonathan Green's art and are a visual feast. The choreography evokes everything wonderful about the paintings and the dancers were flawlessly strong, joyful and passionate. My cheeks hurt I was smiling so hard throughout this wonderful blessing of art -- honest and truly -- literally and better than one's imagination could have dreamed it: "Off the Wall and On to the Stage".
This performance is absolutely wonderful. I own several Jonathan Green's images. This performance takes his artistic color and energy to another level. It is breath-taking. Kudos to William Starrett and each and every performer who danced and sang. The representation of the artwork in the "scenery" was incredibly beautiful. I've been to more than a few Broadway and Metropolitan Opera performances and I can say that this performance was every bit as enjoyable and better than some. Not to be missed.
A true work of art! I can't stop talking about it.
