    Magnificent Monger

by puffinbarger on 5/20/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

I've been following contemporary dance in Portland for more than 40 years. The Israeli company that performed Barak Marshall's piece, 'Monger' were simply some of the best I've ever seen, here or anywhere [L.A., London, New York]. And Marshalls' choreography and showmanship was utterly compelling...innovative, complex, accessible, and highly entertaining. What a joy and inspiration to have this level of artistry available right here at home. Kudos to White Bird and all those folks out there who support the arts in Portland.

Both my wife and i enjoyed the dancing it was different, but inspiring to watch how great the dances were choragraphed. Excellent conditioning and each seem to work well with one another. I hope they enjoyed their visit and hope for them to return.

The dancers had so much energy and passion and expression! It was incredible being so close and being able to see facial expressions, muscles and even sweat! An experience to remember!

    Ailey tour de force AGAIN!

by DantheDanceFan on 3/19/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

Attended both nights, Liked Wed the BEST. Tue had a bit too much "literal" history and some music wasn't my style. Wed night it all came together. Incredible dancing, integrated music, lighting, costume -- hard to find the words to describe -- I saw Judith dance CRY in NY in 1972 - the MOST powerful performance I've ever seen. Wed night had moments that measured up to that standard. As always, Revelations, has me out of my seat, clapping and dancing and wanting more. As Judith told us - at the end of that dance - WE - all know what it's like to be human!!!! Totally amazing, I plan to attend any time they perform on the West Coast, hope I don't have to wait five years. Two friends that had never seen Ailey were BLOWN away - what a joy to introduce them to such awesome dance.

I did not know that the human body could make so many moves in so little time, in such an artistic and aesthetic manner, yet with a spirituality that was incomparable. A phenomenal performance !

A Most memorable evening of dance

by Anonymous on 3/18/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

We have been attending theatre all over the world and following the performance, we decided that our evening with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre was one of the very best. From the opening strains of Ellington's Night Creatures to the closing soulful cries of Revelations, we were riveted! For years I had heard of the company, but it was far more than I expected. Many thanks for making this live performance possible.

Alvin Ailey - a superb performance!

by Anonymous on 3/18/11Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall - Portland

The venue for this performance - the "Schnitz" - as it is lovingly called in Portland, is regal and sumptuous, which is exactly how I would describe this dance troup, and so it was such a fitting setting for them. They are spellbinding, inspirational, and so obviously in love with what they do, and what they do is dance with spirt and gusto and grace and a depth that is so moving. The fluidty of the dancers was breathtaking and mesmerizing - a true gift to watch. I wanted the show to go on and on and on. I had wanted to see them perform for many years, and I finally did so, only to discover how much I have missed over the years.

This was absolutely amazing. The athleticism, grace, and beauty of the dancers is unmatched by any dance company.
