About

More than fifty years ago, a show about New York City changed musical theatre forever. Now, it's come home to make history once again.

From the first notes to the final breath, West Side Story is one of the most memorable musicals and greatest love stories of all time. Arthur Laurents' book remains as powerful, poignant and timely as ever. The score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim — a collection of standards that includes "Tonight," "America," "Maria," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere" — is widely regarded as one of the best ever written. And the extraordinary, Tony-winning choreography by Jerome Robbins completely changed the language of Broadway dance.

This groundbreaking new production, directed by the legendary Arthur Laurents, offers a bold new design that builds on the show's raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. Don't miss this thrilling presentation of a matchless work of art.

Alright for a local community playhouse

by Inspector#9 on 1/21/20The Maryland Theatre - Hagerstown

The props, ticketing, etc was good. Only problem was Tony out performed Maria and it really really showed. Maybe do a better job a matching up the lead characters by performance abilities or lack thereof.

    Smelly

    by B. M. on 1/21/20The Maryland Theatre - Hagerstown

We were seated around some men that bathed in cologne and then others with onion breath. Hard to breathe. Show was difficult to watch because the lady in front of me had huge hair. Not able to really enjoy the show. And the sidewalks into the theater were covered with ice.

    Terrible sound

by M. on 1/21/20The Maryland Theatre - Hagerstown

This production was acceptable for a amateur community theater. The biggest problem was that the musical soundtrack completely drowned out the performers' voices- speaking and singing. When we complained to the tech guys they said- yeah, we hear that complaint all the time. Maybe it's time for someone from the theater company to listen from the audience area? C'mom, this is something that is easy to fix and really dishonors the talents of the performers.

    Loved the Show!

by Jenn P on 1/21/20The Maryland Theatre - Hagerstown

I thought the stage construction was awesome! The theater company was absolutely wonderful! (There was a tiny microphone issue, during one song, and you could hear heavy breathing when the actors left the stage after one dance number and someone asking for water, but their mics were turned off, right away- opening night issues!) The casting of Maria and Anita were FANTASTIC!!! Their voices were beautiful and spot on! Maria's voice was angelic and sounded just like Natalie Wood. The ONLY person who could match her was the amazingly talented, Tony, played by Wilson Jermaine Heredia. I never liked the expression of someone's voice sounding like butter, but my goodness, his performance was so smooth and flawless, I understand it now. "Tonight" literally brought tears to my eyes. Well done, Authentic Community Theater Members!!

    Westside Story at the LEX

by Stew on 7/18/19Lexington Opera House - Lexington

Everything was excellent from the facility to the talent. We don't know how the two main characters or the orchestra could be better.

    Outstanding

by David on 7/16/19Lexington Opera House - Lexington

It was a great performance in a beautiful facility. This was the first time we had been to the Lexington Opera House and it is stunning, and also very intimate, but not too small where you feel cramped. I doubt there is a bad seat in the house. The performance itself was magnificent. The cast was made up of rising stars and up and comers we were told, but gave the performance of seasoned veterans, especially the fellow that played Tony. His vocal range was awfully impressive. The choreography, costumes, and stage remained true to the original from the 60's. West Side Story is my wife's favorite show, and we were pleased in every way. It certainly gives us confidence in the future about attending events associated with this venue and company. Well done!
