    Wesla Whitfield: The Best

by GilSaul on 1/26/16Society Cabaret at the Hotel Rex - San Francisco

I first heard cabaret singer Wesla Whitfield in the late 1980s. She was very good then; today, it would be hard to think of anyone in America who better understands and delivers this repertoire. Wesla's dramatic (and comic) timing is unerring, her selection of songs is true, and she never wastes a single word of lyric, ringing (or wringing) out all the meaning, like a great poet. She has a superb accompanist and arranger in Mike Greensill and a standout bass player in John Wiitala. She is one of the best reasons to come to the Bay Area.

Wesla and Michael are simply the best!

Been following Wesla since the 70s in California, New York and Jersey. Everybody loves her and she only got better after she connected with Michael. Wonderfully talented artists who are very special people. Run don't walk to their next performance.

    Wesla and Mike were great.

Our party of 2 was seated between 2 tables of 3. We had a 6" square for food and drink! Did not order food!

    Wesla in top form

by Deshi on 1/26/15Society Cabaret at the Hotel Rex - San Francisco

A wonderful evening, regrettably over too soon for me. I love the American songbook and Wesla performs them beautifully. This venue also is wonderful. It is intimate with good sight lines and good acoustics. Also, the food and drink menu is quite reasonable.

    Wonderful Wesla

by jrap0 on 1/26/15Society Cabaret at the Hotel Rex - San Francisco

Mike Greensill is perhaps the most expressive piano player/accompanist/arranger in the bay area. He began with a solo introduction piece and then was joined onstage by Wesla Whitfield. She is the best interpreter of "The Great American Song" performing in the bay area today. I have heard her sing over the last 28 years in many venues and she just gets better. We attended opening night at Society, when they performed for an audience of about 14 or so. What a change, they sold out the room for two nights this time, perhaps 60-75 seats. The food was good, the drinks reasonable (for downtown SF) and the music superb. Many in the audience were old time fans and Mike and Wesla stayed outside the room and greeted them all after the performance. The Sutter/Stockton garage is only two blocks away so if street parking is impossible there is a guaranteed and more or less reasonable alternative.

    Delightful performance, a great evening!

I have been listening to Wesla Whitfield's music for over 15 years and finally had the opportunity to attend one of her events. Ms. Whitfield gave an amazing vocal performance of great warmth and wit in the very intimate setting of the Society Cabaret. Recordings can't begin to deliver the experience of that evening. It was a night to remember!
