About

A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship.

England, 1914. As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

This powerfully moving and imaginative drama, filled with stirring music and songs, is a show of phenomenal inventiveness that is currently playing to packed houses in London, New York and Toronto. At its heart are astonishing life-sized puppets created by South Africa's Handspring Puppet Company, that bring to life breathing, galloping, charging horses strong enough for men to ride.

    Very well done

    by Care47 on 6/29/13play - Applketon

Quite different from what I expected. The puppetry was absolutely amazing making the horses seem quite real. The play, itself, carried us from farm through the war with very convincing special effects. I highly recommend this production.

    Great Story

by BuckeyeGal on 4/29/13Palace Theatre - Columbus

The play was fantastic. I love musicals and plays and this was something different but in a good way. The horses and puppeteers were really fabulous. I would recommend this to any one. The crowd really got into the story!

If you enjoyed the Lion King, you should see War Horse. The horses seemed real. The production was excellent. I would like to see it again.

    Just so-so

by seatab on 2/16/13Paramount Theater - Seattle

The show really dragged in parts, and had me looking at my watch hoping for it to end. The sets were almost non-existent, and very minimal. The puppeteers being onstage was distracting and made it hard to lose yourself in the play. The horses themselves were very well done and were a really neat thing to see. Some scenes in the play would have been difficult to follow if you didn't already know the story from the book or movie. One of the few times I'd say the movie was significantly better than the play.

War Horse is an Unique and Interesting experience

by dogtired18 on 11/30/12Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I had always wanted to see this play. I avoided it because I thought the subject matter would be too upsetting. Then the movie came out. I wanted to see that too. Ultimately, I felt the play would be the lesser of 2 evils, emotionally speaking. Mostly I wanted to see the play because of what I had heard about the puppetry; i.e. the bits and pieces that were shown during advertisements. It was impressive. I was not blown away as I had hoped. The puppeteers do a great job, but must be visible due to the intrinsic nature of their jobs. Unfortunately, I found this distracting. They ever 'disappeared' for me. In every scene I thought, Who's that guy holding the horse? Who's that lady chasing that goose? I am very glad I saw this play once. I probably will not see it again. If you are interested, I strongly urge you to check it out. Most people enjoy it immensely. Good luck

    War Horse

by HugeCCRFan on 11/21/12Benedum Center for the Performing Arts - Pittsburgh

The story is of a boy and his horse set in the time prior to and during WW I. The most entertaining part of the performance was the puppetry which brought the horses in the play to life, very well done. The story is a very serious one and at times quite depressing. This is not a story for young children because of the war content which, at times, was displayed somewhat graphically. On the positive side the acting was very good and as mentioned the puppetry was superb. The entire cast was excellent. The drawbacks were that the story, while thought provoking, was not as entertaining as I expected, it was for the most part depressing. In addition the audio volume left a lot to be desired as many of the lines spoken by the actors were inaudible. To me and my guest the show was a 3 star rating but was raised to 4 stars due to the superb puppetry.
