Wanda Sykes has been deemed one of the funniest stand up comics by her peers and ranks among Entertainment Weekly's 25 Funniest People in America.
Sykes was seen on several television shows over the past two years. This year she made a return to HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” starring opposite Larry David. In 2010 she starred on her own late night talk show on FOX, “The Wanda Sykes Show”. In October of 2009 her second HBO stand up special “I’ma Be Me” premiered. It was taped at the Warner theatre in Washington DC where she tackled topics like the first black president, gay cruises, being a new mom and aging. The special was nominated for two 2010 Primetime Emmy awards: Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special.
This July she can be heard in the animated feature “Ice Age: Continental Drift” as ‘Granny.’ In 2010 she was heard in the Fox animated feature “Rio” as ‘the Goose.’
Her first HBO comedy special “Wanda Sykes: Sick and Tired” debuted in October 2006 and was nominated for a 2007 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special. It was taped in Seattle and covered everything from racial profiling to gay marriage.
Sykes was seen in the feature films “Evan Almighty,” the sequel to “Bruce Almighty,” in which she co-starred with Steve Carell, the New Line feature “Monster-In-Law” starring opposite Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, and was heard in the animated feature “Over the Hedge” for Dreamworks as well as “The Barnyard” for Paramount Pictures. She can also be seen co-starring with Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman in the romantic comedy “My Super Ex-Girlfriend.” Sykes starred and produced the Comedy Central show "Wanda Does It" where she tried various non-showbiz jobs. Her first book titled Yeah, I Said It, published by Simon & Schuster, hit bookstores in September 2004. Yeah, I Said It is a hilarious collection of essays touching on life, family and current events.
In the fall of 2003 she was seen on Fox's "Wanda at Large" which she wrote, produced and starred in. She also has a one hour Comedy Central special called "Wanda Sykes: Tongue Untied". In addition, she can be seen on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" or heard on Comedy Central's "Crank Yankers” as the voice of Gladys Murphy.
Wanda was born in Portsmouth, VA and raised in Maryland. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University. Her stand-up career began at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience.
She spent 5 years as part of HBO's critically acclaimed "Chris Rock Show." As a performer and writer on the show, she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys and in 1999 won the Emmy for "Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special." In 2001, she won the American Comedy Award for "Outstanding Female Stand Up Comic". She won three more Emmys, in 2002, 2004 and 2005 , for her work on “Inside the NFL” for Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly- Inside The NFL.
In 2010 she won a GLAAD award for promoting equal rights for gays and lesbians in the media.
She also appeared in the feature films: "Pootie Tang", "Nutty Professor 2; The Klumps", and "Down to Earth".

I'M SEEN WANDA BEFORE AND I THINK SHE IS VERY FUNNY. I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WHEN SHE STARTED HER POLITICAL JOKES, I'M NOT FOND OF EITHER PARTY BUT I THINK SHE SPENT TOO MUCH TIME AIRING HER POLITICAL BELIEFS
As always, Wanda can make me roar with laughter. A feat that few comedians can achieve.
Wanda Sykes is a brilliant comedienne!! She is so funny, always a great night! You are laughing about her stories days later! And the Count Basie Theater is also a great venue, very nice, comforable.
Wanda's show was the greatest. The problem was getting into Warner Theater. The doors were supposed to open at 6:30, the show was supposed to start at 7:30. We had hoped to get inside and have a drink, then see the show.-Ha! We waited in line until after 8:00; we did not enter the building until 5 minutes before the show started. Wanda was still worth waiting for. Hardly caught our breath from laughter throughout most of her show. Very enjoyable, would go to see her again and again!
Wanda Sykes always delivers! She is so authentic by addressing everyday human challenges like family interactions, aging and failing bodily functions, or political/social issues. She nails it all! I love her!
This was my 2nd time seeing Wanda Sykes live. I enjoyed her show and was pleased to see she had Keith Robinson opening for her after he’s suffered two strokes and is still recovering. Her comedy style is different from the likes of Tiffany Haddish, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Katt Williams or Bill Bellamy. All of whom I like since each has their own style that works for them. I like and appreciate the different lanes they each perform in. She was funny but has never been a hardy, belly laugh comedian. Which is fine. She’s entertaining and was worth the price of the tickets, IMHO.
Wanda's show was GREAT. We've seen her multiple times and never miss her when she comes to DC. Really enjoyed the show. I cannot say the same about Warner Theatre. We have been there many times before but the lines and ordeal to get INSIDE were the worst we've ever seen. You could not get a paper ticket to this show (per Live Nation, the artist dictates if you can get a paper ticket, or you must use your phone as your ticket). Definitely prefer paper, especially because all phones have to be locked up in the pouches during the show. The show was an HOUR late starting, presumably because of the lines to get in. We purchased a pre show party at a rooftop terrace in the Warner's building. The terrace itself was incredible and it was a nice weather day. There was confusion about what exactly the ticket ($50 each) included. It was supposed to be one drink and then an appetizer buffet, but there were no drink tickets. They also put the package on sale earlier on the show day for $30. I'll cut them some slack because this was the first time doing this party, and I think they will get it ironed out. The food was good and we really enjoyed it.
Wanda as always was awesome. The venue itself was disappointing and needs remodeling. . Freezing cold!! I understand Wanda gets hot on stage but … I would not go back to the Warner Theater and Wanda deserves a better venue.
I LOVE Wanda Sykes! I have seen he several times in the past and always found her brilliant observations right on target and delivered with humor and comic relief. Her show in DC was a bit rockier than I've seen before as she had to repeatedly refer to her on-stage notes and had some trouble staying on track. I get it- it's early in the tour and she's still working stuff out. Her political comments riled a few tRumpers in the audience and I am glad she had a strong presence of security who were keeping their eye on the louder ones. I had not seen this ne cell phone security pouches before and thought it a clever way for you to keep your phone with you but not use it in any way. All-in-all a good show and I'm sure later in the tour it will tighten up considerably. Go Wanda!!
