Bettye LaVette's voice was classic rythm and blues with a superb band backing her up! We left after her performance. She should have been billed as the main act!
I actually attended because I really wanted to see Bettye Lavette, a stellar vocalist who never received her due recognition. She didn't disappoint - Lavette sang with a conviction and a mastery that is rarely seen. She sings what she likes and the range of repertoire went way beyond typical RnB/Soul, including Savoy Brown's I'm Tired, The Beatles "The Word", Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy", Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" and The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me". No matter what she sang, she put her own spin on it - her delivery just drips with emotion. My only negative observation is that, although the band was competent, she deserves a band more in tune with the emotional delivery that she projects - a little more sensitivity to dynamics would have added a lot to the overall performance. On the other hand, Wanda Jackson, self-effacing, very funny and certainly a legend, simply doesn't have the musical chops to be on the same bill as Lavette. The performance, though, was entertaining, and the audience appeared to really appreciate someone who at 75 is still out there performing.
The Wonder Bar was packed and the heat started building as soon as Wanda took the stage. At 73 the Queen of Rockabilly held court with a smattering of Classics, Covers and a few tunes off her new Jack White produced album. Between songs she delighted the crowd with some Storytelleresk tidbits about her time with Elvis, what it was like working with Jack and of her struggles to produce her first American Hit. Her voice was superb and she still has a few wiggles and jiggles left in her. I highly recommend her show, even if you aren't a big Rockabilly fan. It was just good entertainment.
It was fun seeing Wanda Jackson do some of her old hits. However, the second act with Carolyn's wonderful vocals and clever lyrics definitely stole the show.
I've been a fan of Wanda Jackson for a while, but I've never gotten the chance to see her live. I'm really glad that I was able to see her because even in her 70's she knows how to put on a show! Her voice sounds just as good as it does on her early recordings even though she was battling laryngitis. She did a good mix of her classic songs and some of her newer songs as well. She threw in a couple of Elvis covers and a cover of Amy Winehouse that was recorded on the album she worked on with Jack White. Highley recommend you see her live if you have the opportunity. Will not disappoint.
The opening act Best West Coast were very boring and repetitive in regards to their songs. The crowd did not cheer untill their last song. The Dusty 45s from Seattle (Wanda Jackson's backup band) came on next and played a short set of their own material which really got the crowd going. Their songs had energy and variety which set the audience up for Wanda's appearance. Wanda then came on and sang an excellent set. She spoke about her singing career over the years and the different tribute songs to different artists.
Five of us came to hear Wanda Jackson and ended up attending a show consisting of Best Coast and Wanda's back-up band. A wan Wanda came on stage at 11:30. After two and a half hours of standing up (no seats), my friends and I were done. Would never do a show like this again.
A good time! Wanda was great. Worth the $$ for a worthy charity.
Bands were great, but the sound was severely lacking. From monitors cutting out partway through a song and frustrating the band members, to severe feedback popping in halfway through a song as well, there were far too many problems for a show of this caliber. The sound quality in the arena was terrible with all the echoing effects, so only those close to the stage got to hear clearly. Also, dancing on the dirt floor was workable, but far from ideal. Came in at 11AM and was told there were no in and out privileges. How crazy is that? Then found out when we left at 6:30PM that they actually were allowing people to come and go. Good lineup of acts, but if they don't fix the sound issues the next go around, then this might be a good one to pass on.
