About

Spend an intimate evening with Sophie Tucker: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas! She was America's Queen of the double entendre. Naughty? Yes, in a fun-loving way with a wink or two, that's never graphic or obscene. Take delight in the woman who inspired generations of comedians (including Bette Midler) and celebrate musical hits from the 1920s, including "Real Women Have Curves," "Living Alone and I Like It," "After You've Gone," "Fifty Million Frenchmen Can't Be Wrong," "My Yiddishe Momme," "Life Begins at Forty" and, her uplifting signature song, "Some of These Days."

    Warm and dedicated

by PhilaBert on 12/23/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

This was beautiful staging, and both the piano player and our star did a wonderful job of making torch songs real. She dressed the part and played the part well. She had a good voice, and kept it up through almost 2 hours of the performance! She is dedicated, but her voice is not equal to a torch song singer. We missed the dusky, raspy voice of someone of this category.

    What a voice!

Totally entertaining. Great singing, clever lyrics, fabulous costumes. Loved the small and intimate audience. We were like family. Sophie was great; she said it for a lot of us girls.

    Sophie Tucker

by selsav on 12/17/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

It was truly a fabulous one-woman show (plus a piano player) set in an early 20th century 'Parlor' with a fringed scarf over the grand piano and a chaise lounge. But it was 'Sophie,' herself, who delivered with her hit songs interspersed with biographical patter and spicy jokes and brash costumes (she made a change after the intermission) and a wide range of material from brassy to a touching rendition of Yiddisha Momme that brought tears to our eyes. The actress was a true PRO and we couldn't take our eyes off her, especially since we sat on the first row.

    Bawdy, Fun, Fast-Paced

by BostonPhillyTraveler on 12/10/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

As a child, I grew hearing my grandmother's gay friends repeat lines from the legendary Sophie Tucker. Seeing this show brought back fond memories and also plenty of laughs since the characterization was so flawless. This is one of those shows that is so fast-paced that you don't even check your watch.

We left at intermission - it was not funny and we couldn't make it through another round :(

    Sophie Tucker was GREAT!

by GrandpaJoel on 12/3/13Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

From the very beginning, the writing was terrific. "Sophie" was so well played, her voice was great, and her interactions with the piano player were natural, funny, and well-written. The piano player was very very good, and the score was perfect. Sophie's interaction with the audience was clever, warm, welcoming, and cute. Sophie was on stage and singing for the entire show, a tremendous physical feat. I will remember this show for a long time. What more can I say?
