    needs more than red

by Literallou on 3/23/16Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

the tension between the two characters was completely missing until the last 15 minutes. Until then, it played like a very dry sermon on modern art, which doesn't need any more hot air. If one can stay awake, the last 15 minutes are quite enjoyable. And why cafe doors?

    A Production of Excellence

by CosmicGaze on 3/22/16Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

Actors - engaging, superb. Artistic level of total production - incredible. Actors doubled as stage hands and were able to change sets quickly within a well-worked-out choreography. Impressive solution to working within a small stage area and impressive action choices, such as priming a canvas onstage, by the director. Set truly gave feeling of an artist's studio with a mix of artist's materials and very ordinary creature comforts. Its subject -- a series of exchanges between a leading painter and his assistant -- proceeded with a plodding sense of the mundane but surprised by unanticipated 'aha' moments. I thought the final visual effect of black and red brilliant. The play did not seem like 90 minutes long.
